Carmen Arana, CT Technologist, Northwell Health Reichert Family Imaging at Huntington
As a CT Technologist, Carmen operates a computed tomography (CT) machine which creates detailed images of internal organs, bones, soft tissue and blood vessels. “I have the unique experience of being able to provide a safe and complete diagnostic exam using state-of-the-art technology,” says Carmen. “I enjoy helping patients have the best experience possible and appreciate the thanks and smiles I am given in return.” And using her skills, Carmen even had the unique opportunity to work with The Nature Conservancy to scan samples of water from different marshes using a CT scanner, a project designed to help improve the quality of water that surrounds Long Island.
Enid Hernandez, Registered Vascular Technologist, Vascular Surgery at Lake Success
While most people associate sonograms with pregnancy, Enid is a sonogram technologist who specializes in vascular disease. Working as a vascular technologist, she captures images used to help diagnose diseases of the arteries or veins. Seeking a technology-based career where she could help people, Enid found her calling in imaging. “My favorite thing about being an RVT is the variety of different tests I get to perform on a daily basis,” says Enid. “Some days I even assist the doctor with venous ablation procedure. It’s one thing to read about these procedures in school but the actual experience of assisting in surgery is so rewarding.”
Erika Fernandez, Mammography Technologist, Reichert Imaging at Huntington
As a mammography technologist, Erika is responsible for capturing an image of the breast that helps doctors diagnose abnormalities including breast cancer. Though a mammography may only take 10-15 minutes, Erika knows the importance of greeting her patients with a confident and friendly face during an experience that may leave some patients nervous. “It is our goal to provide a warm and comfortable environment for patients while providing quality imaging, emotional support and a patient rapport,” says Erika. “Breast cancer is known as one of the most common malignancies among women. It makes me proud to know I play an important role in prevention and disease management for the women in our community.”
Jacqueline Benoit, Radiologic Technologist, Northwell’s Orthopaedic Institute at Great Neck
Working as a radiologic technologist is extremely rewarding for Jacqueline, who prides her team on being able to think outside of the box to deliver care to patients who may have unique orthopaedic conditions. As a team lead, Jacqueline aids our surgeons to diagnose fractures, bone pathology, diseases, deformities as well as providing images of organs, soft tissue, and vessels. Using her practice’s imaging machines, she is able to capture the vital images surgeons need to treat quality of life impacting issues and deliver life-saving solutions to our patients. “I take pride in my work here at Northwell, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to assist others in need,” says Jacqueline. “We are always ready for anything while trying to make our patients as comfortable as possible.”
Jamie Farina, MRI Technologist, Northwell Imaging at Great Neck
As a MRI technologist, Jamie first screens patients thoroughly to be certain it is safe for them to have an MRI. She prides herself on helping to ensure their overall experience is a smooth one. “My favorite thing about being an MRI Tech is the team that I work with,” says Jamie. “We always go the extra mile to ease our patients about whatever nerves they might be having. It’s nice to know that at the end of the day, people feel comfortable and safe coming to us. We are making a difference.”

Why I’m Made for an ultrasound technologist career at Northwell

Working at the front desk for a radiologist at a young age, I quickly realized I had a passion for interacting with patients. With the encouragement of my team, I decided to became an ultrasound technologist and have worked at Northwell Health for nearly two years.
People assume radiology is just someone taking pictures and that’s all. It’s much more than that. It’s scanning a women who just had an abnormal mammogram and is getting a second look. It’s having a patient come in with stroke like symptoms who just a few hours ago could walk and talk but now has no motor function. It’s the parents of a child who is sick with a cold. It’s scanning a cancer survivor to see if their cancer has come back. It’s dealing with the patient’s pain, worry and sadness, and still providing care that helps make them forget about their fears for a moment. Because as an ultrasound technologist, we’re taking images that will help patients get the answers.
Knowing a visit to an Imaging Center can be a stressful time for patients, I try to ease their anxiety and keep them calm during their visit especially when they are looking to me for results and I have to politely explain that their images need to be interpreted by a radiologist. As a radiology professional I know that can be trying for the patient but we want to ensure we have reviewed all images thoroughly before providing results.
I was introduced to women’s imaging, especially breast imagining early in my career and quickly found that I had a passion for early diagnosis of breast cancer. Some of my fondest memories as an ultrasound technologist are when breast cancer survivors returned to visit us at the practice. To see her smile when she saw her face and knowing I was part of delivering her care was so rewarding. I know that what I do made a difference in not just her life but her kids and her family. It makes me feel so proud of my hard work and dedication.
Early detection saves lives and knowing that I can play a part in helping to save a life, is why I chose to become an ultrasound technologist. Working for Northwell has been a life-changing experience, I have met so many amazing technologists, radiologists and administrators. I truly feel like this is where I was meant to be.
What is Northwell Health’s Radiology Administrative Succession Program (RASP)?
The Radiology Administrative Succession Program is a one-year program that develops and enhances Northwell’s radiology leaders to enable them to take the next step in their career. During the program, leaders are provided with educational opportunities, knowledge sharing, hands-on learning and training with senior radiology leaders across the Imaging service line and hospital radiology departments.
“Succession planning is vitally important for ensuring the continued success of any business. The radiology service line has an amazing pool of top talent who we have identified and developed in an effort to fill future roles. Our goal is to focus on cultivating managers from within Northwell to ensure the leaders of the future are in place,” says Melone Pernice, Administrative Director, Radiology at Plainview Hospital.
Radiology team members are nominated by their leaders to participate in RASP and then the RASP Committee selects the final participates based on their nominations. This year, three team members were selected to participate in the inaugural class.
“RASP demonstrated to me that everyone is part of the same team and each person is fully invested in your success. All components of the program — from the subject matter classes, system level meetings and one-on-one mentoring — gave me the confidence I would need to handle any future obstacles. RASP is essential to ensure the future leaders are prepared for tomorrow, “says RASP participant Adrienne Wilson, radiology manager at Plainview Hospital.
The need for students to pursue STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) careers is greater than ever and for good reason. Between 2000 and 2010, STEM-related jobs grew three times as fast as non-STEM jobs – a rate projected to increase.
You may be left wondering what STEM jobs you can pursue. STEM careers go beyond just being a doctor or an engineer – the opportunities are endless! So what are some of the major STEM careers you should be exploring?
Imaging technologists are Allied Health professionals that complete a two or four year program from accredited college. Graduates are licensed by the NYS Department Of Health or registered or certified in a sub-specialty area to perform diagnostic imaging examinations. Using the most advanced imaging equipment, imaging professionals are trained to produce high-quality images that enable the Radiologist (physician) to make a critical diagnosis. Without their expertise, care teams wouldn’t be able to diagnose and treat patients effectively.
You can enjoy the flexibility to choose additional specializations such as computed tomography (CT), ultrasound, nuclear medicine, mammography and more. And as an imaging professional, you’d have the ability to work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, diagnostic labs, and ambulatory centers.

2. Certified Surgical Technologist
Surgical technologists have the important task of prepping patients for surgery and ensuring the operating room’s equipment has been sterilized and properly stocked with supplies. Your job as a surgical technologist doesn’t end there – you’d remain in the OR to assist surgeons throughout the surgery and then help to dress wounds. At Northwell, Registered Nurses and the Certified Surgical Technologist function as a subunit within a team, interacting through a unique, dynamic relationship—one sterile role and one nonsterile role, working in collaboration.
Job opportunities for surgical technologists are on the rise as the growth in population and technology leads to an increase in the frequency of surgical procedures. Completing a surgical technologist certification program usually takes around two years, allowing you the unique chance to quickly scrub into your first surgery after school.
Becoming a doctor or nurse isn’t the only option for science majors to join the healthcare industry! Research careers enable professionals to work in programs and partnerships that help study, test and improve clinical breakthroughs. Medical research also includes working on some of the most exciting technology to treat disease and injury, such as bioelectronic medicine. Not all research careers are clinical either – as a medical researcher you can work in engineering, statistics, and more.
Join together research and technology as part of a team working on cutting-edge discoveries in areas such as health outcomes research, translational science, behavioral science and more. As a member of the research team, you’d also have the ability to work on breakthroughs in major diseases from cancer to lupus to sepsis. 4. Telemetry Technicians
Telemetry technicians, also called monitoring technicians or electrocardiograph technicians (EKG or ECG), are important allied health professionals. These technicians use non-invasive electrocardiographic equipment to monitor patients’ heart rhythms and alert nurses and physicians to changes in the patient’s rate, rhythm and the occurrence of dysrhythmias while on the Telemetry Unit.
Working as a telemetry technician allows you to work within a hospital using advanced technology. There are also increasing opportunities for you to deliver compassionate care to patients within a hospital or ambulatory setting. And training programs prepare you for entering the healthcare industry in just a few months!
5. Clinical Laboratory Scientist
To become a clinical laboratory scientist you must obtain your bachelor’s degree from an accredited clinical laboratory science program, pass your ASCP national certification exam and then become licensed by New York State Education Department (NYSED) to practice. As a clinical laboratory scientist, you can work in exciting fields such as:

Every moment matters: How Nilda Adair is making a difference with patient experience
Connecting to people and making a difference are the cornerstones of why so many people start their healthcare careers. Nilda Adair, Chief Radiation Therapist at Lenox Hill Hospital, strives to ensure her team never forgets the spirit of caring that brought them to the industry.
Nilda’s career in radiation medicine had an unlikely start, after a career in Human Resources, Nilda took time off to raise her children. During this time, she sought out meaningful ways to connect with her community, Nilda began volunteering in radiation oncology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJMC). It was this experience that shifted everything. “When I started volunteering in radiation oncology, I felt so inspired by the employees – by their passion, their enthusiasm, and their motivation,” Nilda says, “I thought, ‘when I grow up, I want to be like them’ and I knew immediately I wanted to pursue a career in radiation oncology with Northwell.”
Volunteering inspired Nilda to go back to school to become a radiation therapist. She didn’t want to become a radiation therapist just anywhere – her heart was set on a position at LIJMC, “I knew if I’m going to work, Northwell is where I wanted to be.” After starting with per diem work at Northwell as a radiation therapist in 1997, Nilda transitioned to full time after just a few months.
However, her career goals didn’t stop there. Nilda’s passion and commitment to her work helped her move her way up through her years at Northwell, serving as a supervisor before becoming chief in 2013. If the day to day responsibilities didn’t keep her busy enough, she also became the Patient Experience Culture Leader for radiation medicine. In this role, Nilda is responsible for overseeing the local patient experience – leading and effecting change. It is this unrelenting passion for delivering the best care to our patients that reminds Nilda daily why she joined the healthcare industry.
Throughout her rise in Radiation Medicine, Nilda’s love for patient experience never wavered. The role of chief would mean taking a step back from interacting with patients directly, it also provided her with the opportunity to increase quality of care through empowering others. “I realized that by empowering my team, I’m able to help even more patients,” Nilda says, “We’re able to meet our goal of making sure that every patient feels like someone is spending time taking care of them, and that they don’t feel like a piece in a production line.”
Her role as a culture leader was a trajectory that started early on in her career. Over the years, Nilda was given the opportunity to work projects that led to improved patient experience. Embracing these opportunities meant that she was part of the team that help reduce the number of reduce the number of days between consult and treatment for specific disease sites, improved therapist workflow efficiency increasing the amount time team members spend crucial points of care, and to drive performance in our safety culture just to name a few.
Serving as a culture leader has allowed Nilda to expand her own knowledge of what matters to patients, “I’ve learned that a patient’s experience isn’t just impacted by the staff they interact with. It’s important to realize that all senses play a role in, not only, how we are perceived but impacts the overall feeling the patient has when they leave the hospital.” By taking every moment of the experience into consideration, Nilda and her team can deliver the best care experience for patients.
No matter her position, Nilda always remembers that spark that ignited while she was volunteering, “Focusing on patient experience helps us all remember the spirit of why we chose health care in the first place – make a connection, to help people, and to make a difference.”

Edlyn Fernandez has come full-circle. When she began her career at Northwell Health as a Front Desk Clerk, she used her position to build up her terminology while she went through Radiology school. After graduating from her radiology program with honors, she moved to an X-Ray Technician position and eventually came back to Long Island Jewish, Valley Stream Hospital as a Per Diem Cat Scan Technologist, where she worked for five years while she received her advanced certification in Cat Scan.
Edlyn still had places to go! After four years as a Per Diem Cat Scan Technologist, she was promoted to Cat Scan and MRI Supervisor where she oversaw both modalities in which the department acquired ACR accreditation. She eventually moved into the role of Radiology Manager where she assisted the director in departmental needs such as patient safety and staff scheduling, the ACR accreditation of multiple modalities, IT troubleshooting with PACS and Ris system, the implementation of Sunrise Clinical Manager, and obtaining data for quality metrics such as turnaround time.
Edlyn is putting all of this experience to good use now as Administrative Director of Radiology, the same department she started her career in. Her new role gives her the ability to collaborate with administration, nursing, and the rest of the hospital for timely discharges and lengths of stays, all while performing daily briefs to set expectations and goals for the staff.
“The work you put in at Northwell Health is repaid with opportunities to grow. I’ve always been dedicated and it’s been an honor to be here starting off as a Front Desk Clerk and growing into my current role,” she says.
The Northwell Health values of never settling, relying on each other, and utilizing her ambitious spark make Edlyn an outstanding teammate. Her dedication and career progress make us proud to call her a valued team member. She’s an amazing example of how at Northwell Health, you never know what heights your career will take you.

Initially, it never occurred to me to consider Tech School. I was going to school to become an accountant and during that time I worked in a small radiology facility. I worked with John, the director of an Ultrasound program. My desk faced the wall and our desks were caddy corner. One day, John approached me and said, “Consider Ultrasound school and forget accounting”. In so many words, I told him to leave me alone. He responded, “OK, sit in the corner for the rest of your life”. I will never forget how I felt in that moment. I started to pay more attention to the Tech’s and each modality. Ultrasound interested me because there is an art to it; the probe is your camera. I was hooked and I knew I wanted to pursue a career in Ultrasound.
I began my career at Huntington Hospital in 2008. I worked with esteemed Radiologist Dr. Wank and he recruited me to go to Great South Bay Imaging in late 2010 when the practice wasn’t even open yet (I literally wore a hard hat while I interviewed with Bill Brostek). It may sound cliché, but I do believe that everything happens for a reason. Just like with John, Bill saw something in me that day. He hired me as a staff Technologist and then I was promoted to Ultrasound Supervisor and not long after that, I was promoted to Practice Manager of the facility. Over the course of 7 years, I have seen many changes and growth within our facility. From the earliest moments of my career, the team that I have worked with has solidified the reasons I was drawn to this field in the first place. Technologists graduate with a foundation of knowledge in patient care. It is not until this knowledge is put into practice that a Technologist begins to realize that patient care is the most important part of our job. Even though a majority of my day is no longer spent scanning patients, patient care remains my utmost priority.
I often look ahead to the future. Just as I have evolved and grown within my career, the field of radiology will continue to evolve and grow. Northwell Health continuously provides opportunities that break down barriers so that there are no limitations to the level of success we can all achieve. This fosters an environment in which patients can be part of a health system that is a step above the rest. Northwell Health has afforded me opportunities in my career that I never deemed possible, especially when I look back at myself sitting in the corner all of those years ago.
Many people have not only believed in me but instilled a drive that I didn’t know existed within myself. The moment I wake up each morning, I have a mantra I often repeat – I am part of something greater and I am going to make a difference today. I often reiterate this mantra to my team so that we don’t lose sight of our common goal. Simply put, we all entered this field to help people. Patient care is our #1 priority. No matter what an individual’s role is within the health system, that mantra, along with prioritizing patient care, will only enhance the overall success of our Health System. I wear my Northwell Health hat proudly each and every day.

Combining state-of-the-art equipment and advanced technology with subspecialized radiologists, this site offers employees access to outpatient radiology services in Manhattan. Services include: MRI, low dose CT, ultrasound, digital X-ray and bone densitometry. Comprehensive breast imaging services are also offered: 3D mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI and breast biopsies.
