My externship was the most informative eight weeks of nursing knowledge and practice that I have experienced thus far. The Southside Hospital nurse educators and staff provided me with education, engaging experiences and knowledge that I will utilize throughout my entire nursing career.

Chris Peppe
St. Joseph’s College

The Northwell Health Summer Externship program was an amazing experience that gave me confidence going into my senior year of nursing school. I had the opportunity to work a full 12 hour shift alongside the most amazing and educational preceptors. My educators were eager to teach anything and everything they could to broaden all of the externs knowledge. I was getting hands on practical experience on the floor which was also supplemented with classroom experience through simulation. The summer nurse extern program was an experience that I cherish because it increased my clinical confidence and competence.

Jacklyn Grigorian

I was welcomed, challenged, and treated as a part of the team everyday at this incredible program. Not only did I learn valuable nursing skills that will enable me to succeed in my career, I also learned the value of teamwork, compassion, and the importance of putting every patient at the center of care.

  • Didactic experiences and professional seminars that focus on comprehensive assessment skills, patient care management, interprofessional collaboration, nursing models of care delivery, and e-learning
  • Direct care assignments across the range of selected specialties under the supervision of experienced preceptors and educators that guide Fellows towards mastery of content and theory, clinical nursing skills, clinical reasoning, and high-quality patient and family centered care.
Pediatric Nurse Fellowship

Pediatric nurse fellowships offer three programs:

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Fellowship

This is a year-long experience comprised of three phases

  • Phase 1: 10 weeks of didactic content which includes lectures, hands-on-skills, simulation and supervised time on the unit with the master fellow, senior associate fellow, and associate fellows.  During phase one, fellows work closely with Northwell’s corporate simulation center to utilize anatomically correct mannequins of different ages and standardized parents/caregivers (actors) to enhance their experiences.  In addition, fellows are given access to an online learning platform to enhance and reinforce didactic content.
  • Phase 2: 12 weeks of the precepted experience.  New nurse fellows are paired with a preceptor and will follow their schedules.  Weekly goals are set with the preceptor and there are frequent check-ins with the nurse educator and nurse manager in order to individualize the experience to the needs of the nurse fellow.
  • Phase 3: Comprised of the remaining 30 weeks of the first year. During phase 3, nurse fellows work independently. The unit’s resource nurse, nurse educator and manager will continue to check in and support you throughout this period of transition.
