We don’t just help our patients survive cancer at the Northwell Health Cancer Institute. We help them thrive.
Our compassionate team members at the Northwell Health Cancer Institute are focused solely on providing our patients with quality oncology care. We are committed to improving the outcome for tens of thousands of patients on Long Island and throughout the New York metropolitan area. And we’re looking for team members to help us redefine the future of cancer treatment for patients who need our support and care.
Northwell Health has one of the largest cancer programs in the New York metropolitan area. In fact, we see more than 16,000 cancer patients annually across our vast and comprehensive network, more than any other cancer center in the region.
We also offer highly complex care that many specialty cancer centers do not—and cannot—offer due to the resources and expertise that comes with the backing of New York State’s largest private employer. We take a holistic approach to cancer treatment, while also providing the support services and survivorship care that patients and families need to thrive.

Innovative Cancer Care Highlights
We’re guiding the future in oncology care by continuously seeking advanced and more effective ways to diagnose, treat, prevent and survive cancer.
Over the past 30 years, we have enrolled more than 10,000 cancer patients in studies and currently have patients actively participating in more than 110 clinical trials.
In 2014, the Northwell Health Cancer Institute was awarded a five-year, $4.1 million National Cancer Institute Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) grant. The Cancer Institute was one of only 46 institutions in the United States, and the only one on Long Island, selected to participate. Ninety-five percent of our NCORP protocol patients are from Queens, Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
Northwell Health and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), a world leader in cancer research, established a transformative relationship to advance novel cancer diagnostic and therapeutic discoveries. This strategic affiliation brings together CSHL scientists with the Northwell Health Cancer Institute’s more than 200 academic oncologists and clinicians.
Northwell Health and CSHL collaboratively developed the Center for New Cancer Therapies, a new clinical cancer research unit at the Center for Advanced Medicine in Lake Success, NY for our new phase one clinical trials program, which provides patients an opportunity to trial new drugs in early development.
This innovative facility is dedicated to caring for mothers-to-be who have been diagnosed with cancer, women and men who have been diagnosed with cancer and seek to preserve fertility, and those who have previously had a malignancy and want to get pregnant.
Our multidisciplinary team of medical and surgical cancer specialists, maternal fetal medicine physicians, neonatologists and reproductive endocrinologists collaborate to ensure an optimized treatment plan is in place. Unlike many cancer programs, we have expertise in delivering chemotherapy during pregnancy and seamlessly caring for any co-morbidities.
We are also establishing a national registry to follow babies born from mothers who were affected by cancer during pregnancy. Our goal is to better understand the long-term impact of cancer and its treatment on these individuals.
Specializing in the full range of state-of-the-art radiation therapy and minimally invasive surgical techniques, our highly trained radiation oncologists and surgeons have every imaginable option to choose from to deliver exceptional patient care.
Innovative treatments such as True Beam, Gamma Knife, and CyberKnife use multiple radiation beams that converge precisely at the site of the tumor, so nearby healthy tissue isn’t damaged. In fact, we have many non-invasive, specialized treatments that come with fewer side effects and shorter treatment sessions.
Our experts have years of experience, training and knowledge to select the most appropriate treatment options for the best chance at successful outcomes.
Held each year in June, National Cancer Survivors Day ® is a time to celebrate the work being done in the fight against cancer. Northwell Health Cancer Institute has hosted thousands of cancer survivors, their families and providers at our annual events.
Events feature keynote speakers who have been through cancer diagnosis and treatment, and are now leading full and joyful lives. These individuals come from all walks of life to bring hope and encouragement, each speaking of their own unique cancer journey and the importance of thriving – not just surviving.
We are proud to honor the determination of all those in the communities we serve, including the oncology professionals who make survivorship a reality.
Nurses at Northwell Health’s Monter Cancer Center have been recognized by the Long Island/Queens Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) with its 2019 Employer Recognition Award. The team also received the National ONS 2019 Employer Recognition Award in the medium category (26-100 nurses). The honor is given annually to a cancer facility recognized for its outstanding initiatives in promoting professional development and educational opportunities for its oncology nurses.
“We are incredibly grateful to be acknowledged as the recipient of the 2019 ONS employer recognition award,” said Karen Gleason, RN, OCN, vice president of cancer services at Northwell’s Cancer Institute. “Our nurses have an overwhelming sense of pride in everything they do. We put our patients first, but in order to do that we support our nurses by seeking input and ideas from our team to drive education, innovation and change.”
- Northwell Health is the first health system to receive the Network of Excellence in Robotic Surgery designation from Surgical Review Corporation (SRC).
