An opportunity to recognize and show support for all caregivers.
With this year’s National Family Caregivers Month theme, “Caregiving Around the Clock,” we wanted to hear from our own team members about their career journey and experiences as a member of Northwell Health’s Caregiver BERG (Business Employee Resource Group).
Did you know that 73% of all employees in the United States have some type of current caregiving responsibility*? Northwell’s Caregiver BERG was founded to provide support in sharing available resources and developing a workplace culture that helps ease the responsibilities of caregiving. The BERG is comprised of working parents, caregivers for an adult loved one or people caring for both an adult loved one and children.
Meet Dina Morgan, senior advisor for the Employee and Family Assistance Program and co-chair of our Caregiver BERG. Below is her story.
Dina Morgan, Sr. Advisor, Employee and Family Assistance Program, Co-Chair, Caregiver BERG
Dina has specialized in healthcare communications, corporate wellness and health promotion throughout her 40-year career. Prior to joining Northwell in 2016, she had completed a health coach certification and was working on building a health coaching program at a start-up company. Dina came aboard Northwell as a wellness learning and communications specialist, focused on the communications launch of Northwell’s new well-being app, Virgin Pulse and our annual Step Challenge – a walking challenge that features a different destination to motivate team members to stay active and make healthier choices while working as a team.
From there, Dina became an internal communications specialist in 2018 and continued to grow her role in 2019 as an employee wellness program manager. In 2020, Dina became a senior program manager for employee wellness and employee family assistance program (EAP). After two years in that role, she was promoted to director of operations for EAP and then in 2024, moved into her current role as a senior advisor for EAP.
At Northwell, we understand how feeling supported in any caregiver role is important to reduce stress and create a community of people. We prioritize organizing our vast resources so that our team members and their families can get access to what they need, no matter where they are in their caregiver journey. “The Caregiver BERG is so important at Northwell,” shared Dina, “because it allows our organization to support our team members on several key levels so they can thrive in the workplace while managing work-life balance at home.”
Dina loves sharing her experience about the wonderful work the Caregiver BERG and Working Parent Community Support Sessions do to create inclusive and equitable environments. Team members can openly share what’s happening for them, receive incredible insights from fellow colleagues and more support from our counselors. “Personally, I’ve had deeper conversations with my aging parents about things we need to have in place, anticipating their eventual changes as they grow older. These are conversations I didn’t really know I needed to have, and learned quickly that I don’t have to do it alone when the time comes. There are knowledgeable and accessible resources to help along the way.”
This National Family Caregivers Month, Dina encourages everyone to take a moment to reflect on who they are caring for before they arrive at work, and who they are going home to, to care for after work. “If you have even one person you make time for each day to care for – whether it’s preparing a meal, picking up a medication, etc. – that makes you a caregiver. It’s one of the many hats you may wear in your workday on top of your professional responsibilities.” Northwell’s Caregiver BERG supports each caregiver by providing professionals who know how to help caregivers navigate their responsibilities, teach them about helpful resources and how to access them.
Dina is passionate about going the extra mile to advance Northwell’s mission of diversity, inclusion and health equity inside and outside our organization. Discover a career well cared for with our Truly Together team.
