From technologist to director, discover Rova’s journey in laboratory science at Northwell Health

From technologist to director, discover Rova’s journey in laboratory science at Northwell Health

At Northwell Health, our clinical laboratory team members work behind the scenes, utilizing state-of-the-art technology to deliver accurate information to our physicians so our patients can make informed healthcare decisions. Read on to learn more about Rova Lee-Huang, a Truly Ambitious director of clinical laboratory operations at Huntington Hospital.

Rova began her career journey at Northwell Health in 2012 as a clinical laboratory technologist at North Shore University Hospital’s (NSUH) molecular pathology laboratory. In this role, she extracted and analyzed DNA and RNA, and utilized advanced technology to aid physicians and other laboratory experts in disease diagnosis. This led Rova to her next role as a clinical laboratory technologist specialist in 2016, where she designed and optimized workflows for genetic testing. She also ensured high quality and accuracy standards, and trained and mentored other technologists. In 2017, Rova also had the opportunity to represent Northwell and present to the American Society for Clinical Pathology.

In 2018, Rova advanced in her position and began working as a clinical laboratory lead technologist. In this position, Rova trained and mentored molecular technologists and students who in a clinical laboratory technologist program completed their clinical rotation at NSUH. She monitored the lab’s quality control activities, and assisted in managing inventory and other laboratory resources.

Three years later, in 2021, Rova took her career to the next level as she began working as a manager of the clinical laboratory quality in laboratory administration at NSUH. In this role, Rova set the quality standard for all lab tests, ensured all federal and state regulations were followed, monitored lab processes, developed and updated quality policies, and provided guidance to laboratory team members on quality practices. Her work ensured accuracy and reliability of laboratory test results for Northwell’s patients. The experience and coaching Rova received from her director at NSUH prepared her for growth into a director role. In 2024, the opportunity became available at Huntington Hospital’s laboratory, and Rova decided to transfer to Huntington Hospital and take on the challenge of what is now her current role, director of clinical laboratory operations at Huntington Hospital. As the director of clinical laboratory operations, Rova coordinates with various hospital disciplines to ensure that the laboratory’s services meet patients’ needs. She also works closely with the laboratory medical director to develop a strategic plan that aligns with the priorities of Huntington Hospital, hospital administration and other Northwell Health laboratories across the health system.

Since joining Northwell, Rova has leveraged resources and opportunities to advance her career. She completed leadership development courses at Northwell’s Center for Learning and Innovation. Rova also participated in the Northwell Health Essentials of Leadership program and was invited to the North Shore University Hospital GROW group for growing leaders. “I have always been fortunate to have leaders who have supported my growth,” said Rova. “The materials covered in all these development programs helped me advance in my career.” Rova was also enrolled in the 2025 cohort for the Asian Management Accelerator Program through McKinsey Academy. She completed the program in August and reflected on how it was a great way to network with other leaders.

Rova is passionate about how she can contribute to support the mission of continuously improving Northwell Health’s clinical laboratory services. She takes pride in being part of an organization that represents high quality care for patients, and attributes her success to guided conversations with her leaders who’ve supported her along her career journey.

Carrying Service Forward: How Ivan Leverages his Military Experience at Northwell

Carrying Service Forward: How Ivan Leverages his Military Experience at Northwell

For Ivan Goranov, caring for others isn’t just a career, it’s a calling shaped first by his military service experience, now carried through his work as a patient care associate (PCA) at Northwell’s Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH). Today, Ivan is finding new ways to make an impact at Northwell by using the skills he gained while serving in the U.S. Army Reserves.

In 2017, Ivan enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves as a combat medic/healthcare specialist (68W). After completing his training at the U.S. Army Reserves Medical Center of Excellence, he was stationed at Fort Totten, NY, where he built his medical skills through hands-on training. When the pandemic hit, Ivan was called to help develop and implement new safety protocols to protect soldiers and the communities surrounding his base. That experience opened the door for one of the most defining chapters of his career: a nine-month deployment to Africa as a civil affairs team medic.

As the team’s medic, Ivan worked alongside U.S. Embassies and host nation governments who were developing humanitarian aid projects that supported hospitals, schools and underserved communities in areas where resources were scarce.

This deployment was more than just a job to Ivan. It gave him a sense of purpose and recognition that reaffirmed why he had chosen to serve. Inspired by the impact he made abroad, he decided to transition into civil affairs upon his return home. Over the years that followed, he reclassified as a civil affairs specialist (38B) and earned the position of team sergeant, taking on greater leadership and responsibility within the U.S. Army Reserves.

Serving in the U.S. Army Reserves for eight years, Ivan wanted to bring his skills into a civilian setting where he could care for people closer to home. In 2022, he joined Northwell Health.

Today, while still active in the U.S. Army Reserves, Ivan is a PCA in the oncology unit at SIUH, and spends his day assisting patients with daily activities, monitoring vital signs and supporting families through some of their most difficult moments. It’s demanding work, but to Ivan, it’s deeply personal. “The gratitude and recognition I receive from patients and their families, after providing the same level of care I would to my own family, is what keeps me going.”

Ivan also shared that the lessons he learned in the military are a part of everything he does at Northwell. From teamwork to situational awareness, from paying attention to the smallest details to staying focused on infection prevention, he’s found that his training translates seamlessly into his current role. Those skills allow him to deliver care with confidence and compassion, making every patient feel seen and supported.

Adding a civilian career to his military life seemed overwhelming at first, but Ivan says Northwell made the process easy from the very beginning. Before he joined the team, he connected with our Military Liaison Services department. They helped him review his resume, translate his military experience into civilian terms and prepare for the role he wanted. That support continued once he was hired. For Ivan, it wasn’t just about landing a job, it was about knowing there was a team at Northwell dedicated to helping service members thrive. “In my opinion, having a dedicated group of people who are knowledgeable, accessible and passionate about helping service members speaks to the culture at Northwell overall,” he explains.

“My biggest piece of advice to any veteran who joins our team is to make use of the programs that Northwell has to offer.”

For Ivan, his mission evolved. Whether he was supporting humanitarian efforts overseas, leading his Army team, or now caring for oncology patients at SIUH, each step has been about showing up for others. His journey is proof that the skills you carry with you—discipline, teamwork, compassion—can create impact in more than one chapter of your life. At Northwell, there’s space for your skills and your story to thrive.

From clinical sciences to finance, a rewarding career across professions

At Northwell Health, not every role requires being at a patient’s bedside to enhance patient outcomes and make a difference. Everyone, including individuals in financial operations, is passionate about redefining healthcare and revolutionizing patient experiences. Our financial operations team members work behind the scenes to manage financial objectives focused on patient experience enhancements for the communities we serve. Read on to learn more about Mohammed Kazmi, one of Northwell’s Truly Innovative senior financial operations analysts.

Mohammed began his career journey at Northwell in 2018 as a clinical laboratory technologist student during clinical rotations in his senior year of college. In this role, he rotated among different departments of Long Island Jewish Medical Center’s main laboratory to learn while completing his degree requirements. During his rotations, Mohammed made connections within Northwell’s LIJMC which made him realize that he was drawn to the operational and business aspects of the hospital system. He developed a strong interest in data analytics and ultimately the finance aspect of healthcare which impacts patient care.

In 2019, after he graduated and obtained his license, Mohammed joined Northwell as a full-time clinical laboratory technologist in pediatric oncology at Cohen Children’s Medical Center. In this position, he performed hematology and other testing and communicated the results to the physician. While working in this role, Mohammed was also preparing to pivot his career into the financial sector of the organization. During this time, Mohammed also began pursuing his master’s degree in data analytics. The program gave him the foundation he needed to bridge the gap between his clinical lab background and his first role in finance.

In 2022, Mohammed started working as a laboratory information systems analyst intern at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. In this role, Mohammed gained hands-on experience and behind the scenes access into laboratory instruments, workflow of testing and how testing is maintained. By shadowing a laboratory information analyst, Mohammed worked to ensure that all systems were functioning properly. This experience led Mohammed to his next role in 2024, as a corporate financial analyst. Mohammed applied the analytical skills he learned in college to budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting for Northwell’s skilled nursing facilities and imaging centers. He was responsible for the monthly close processes and budgeting for the following year. Two years later, Mohammed transitioned into his current role of senior financial operations analyst. He now manages and reports on financial data, including accounts receivable and budgets, to support strategic decision-making. Mohammed also reviews insurance contracts, resolves discrepancies, and in collaboration with other teams, works to enhance financial reporting through software and processes.

Since joining Northwell, Mohammed has been grateful for the resources and opportunities he has received to grow in his career. Mohammed utilized Northwell’s tuition reimbursement program to pursue his master’s degree in data analytics. Recently, he also completed his master’s degree in healthcare administration, aligning his graduate studies closely with his career goals and current role. “My experience with the tuition reimbursement program is incredible. I truly feel that Northwell has always supported my professional growth, and this program is one of many ways the organization shows it cares for its employees,” said Mohammed. “I hope to use the skills I’ve gained throughout my education to reinvest back into my work,” he continued.

Mohammed shared that he takes pride in being part of an organization that is mission-driven and innovative. Though he does not work face-to-face with patients, he still feels like with every project he works on, he is making a difference in the organization and for patients. “I feel like I am contributing to the big picture of patient care, and I believe my coworkers are equally as passionate about their work,” said Mohammed.

Mohammed has grown his career and skill set. “Here at Northwell, I hear all the time about people advancing their careers. I strongly feel that if you invest your time into Northwell, Northwell invests its time in you.”
