Discover Tyler’s career journey in facilities and support services at Northwell Health

Discover Tyler’s career journey in facilities and support services at Northwell Health

Throughout his time at Northwell, Tyler Gillespie honed his skills to advance his career, received tuition reimbursement, and had mentors guide him, all of which have been instrumental to his professional growth. Learn more about Tyler, who has grown his career and today serves as vice president of capital projects administration at Northwell Health.

Tyler began his career with Northwell in 2004 as a perioperative assistant in the operating room at Glen Cove Hospital. There, he garnered experience in environmental services and patient transport duties while also taking on a part-time contracting position at night. After leaving in 2008 to further explore his passion in general contracting, Tyler found an opportunity to return to Northwell in 2010, leveraging his construction experience as a project coordinator in North Shore University Hospital’s (NSUH) engineering department. In this role, Tyler organized and managed project documentation, schedules and resources. He also tracked results and ensured projects ran smoothly.

This led Tyler to his next position in 2011 as a project manager at the same location, where he was responsible for the complete lifecycle of engineering projects. He also managed risks, delivered engineering solutions on time and within budget, and served as the primary point of contact. Two years later, Tyler grew in his role as a manager of design and construction at NSUH before beginning working as an assistant director of engineering in 2015. In this position, Tyler provided daily operational oversight and maintenance of critical infrastructure, ensuring a safe, functional, and compliant environment. In addition, he supervised staff and managed departmental resources. During this time, Tyler also leveraged Northwell’s tuition reimbursement program and earned his MBA in healthcare administration.

Tyler leveraged his skill set to help advance Northwell’s mission of providing high-quality care to patients and team members. “If what I do [at Northwell] makes the experience better and easier for our patients, as well as our team members, that is what is most rewarding to me,” shared Tyler.

In 2016, Tyler was promoted to director of capital projects at NSUH. He later took a position to gain more experience in managing large-scale capital construction projects along the East Coast and returned to Northwell again in 2021 as a vice president of design and construction, where he oversaw and directed strategic design, construction and renovation initiatives. Additionally, he managed capital budgets and led internal teams and external contractors.

Today, Tyler is the vice president of capital projects administration, where he also ensures the timely delivery of high-quality, compliant and cost-effective facilities that support Northwell’s growth and mission to provide the best patient care and experience.

“I love that I’ve been a part of helping to create some amazing teams and environments within Northwell. Northwell encourages entrepreneurship and outside-the-box solutions for the spaces we build and maintain, from in-house carpentry and cabinetry to artwork/design of spaces in our facilities,” said Tyler. “We can impact new builds and enhance our current facilities.”

Tyler appreciates that Northwell invested in his career growth and created pathways for professional advancement and hopes to do the same for his own team. He added, “Northwell gives you the ability to make your career what you want it to be.”

A career driven by growth: Meet Mark, Director of Clinical Care at Northwell

At Northwell, our nurse leadership team demonstrates their commitment to exceptional care by incorporating innovative thinking into their practice and consistently delivering excellence that elevates the healthcare experience. Learn more about Mark Manalo, one of Northwell’s Truly Ambitious directors of clinical care, who grew in his career from nursing assistant to nurse leader.

Mark began his career journey at Northwell in 2012 as a nursing assistant at Long Island Jewish Valley Stream Hospital. One year later, he transitioned into an emergency room technician role at the same location. Throughout his time in these roles, Mark’s leader worked with him to develop a schedule that allowed him to go to nursing school and support his department simultaneously. This led Mark to his next position, in 2014, as a critical care nursing fellow in the medical intensive care unit (ICU) at North Shore University Hospital. “My time in the critical care nursing fellowship fostered a supportive and educational environment where I could grow as an ICU nurse,” said Mark.

Following the end of the fellowship in 2016, Mark began his role as an assistant nurse manager in the ICU at Long Island Jewish Forest Hills Hospital. In 2017, while in this role, he began pursuing his master’s degree in nursing leadership. In 2018, he transitioned to an assistant nurse manager role in the respiratory and resuscitation care units at Long Island Jewish Medical Center while also finishing his education. In 2019, Mark began working as a critical care clinical professional development educator at Long Island Jewish Forest Hills, where he developed and delivered specialized training, orientations and competency programs for critical care nurses. He also fostered their professional development and clinical expertise to ensure quality patient care.

Today, Mark is working as a director of clinical care for Northwell’s critical care service line across the organization. Notably, Mark is the first nursing professional to hold this role; previously it was held by a physician. He is responsible for working with interdisciplinary teams across ICUs to elevate and standardize practice. Mark provides education, data and metrics for patients while also working with the National Society of Critical Care Medicine.

Mark credits the tools and opportunities he received at Northwell for helping him grow his career. “Northwell continues to push and challenge me and they provide the resources to work through various initiatives and problem-solving,” said Mark.

Mark is a three-time Nursing of the Year winner, and currently a nominee for Northwell’s inaugural Nursing Truly Awards. Mark was asked to be part of the emerging leaders council in 2017, which helped him pilot the 2019 Emerging Leaders Mentorship program. This program helps emerging professionals develop their careers by connecting them with experienced mentors who provide guidance, share knowledge and assist them in achieving their professional goals. . Currently, Mark is part of the LEADNEXT leadership development program, where he serves as a mentor for high school students and an advisor. “Northwell provided me with an official platform to serve as a mentee to those who excelled in their careers,” said Mark. “Now, I am provided with an opportunity to both give back what was given to me and make a difference in the lives of patients.”

Anthony’s Journey from the U.S. Navy to Northwell

Mar 11, 2026/in Veterans /by sgreer2

Anthony’s Journey from the U.S. Navy to Northwell

At Northwell, we recognize that veterans and active members of the military can bring a wealth of knowledge and skills into the workplace. Anthony Castro, a U.S. Navy veteran, is making a meaningful impact as a security officer at Northwell’s Long Island Jewish Medical Center and Cohen Children’s Medical Center.

In his role, Anthony ensures the safety of our patients, visitors, and staff members. He conducts regular patrols, monitors video cameras, enforces strict access protocols, verifies identification, and responds when needed. Beyond safety and security duties, Anthony strives to provide exceptional customer service, guiding patients and visitors, and helping to maintain a welcoming environment.

Anthony served for eight years in the U.S. Navy as an aviation ordnance man. He was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, during which he worked in fast-paced and high-pressure environments, collaborating with his crew to ensure mission readiness. He gained valuable logistical experience by processing and tracking inventory. He served in active duty until 2006 and continued in the U.S. Navy Reserves for two more years.

After transitioning from the military to civilian life, he worked as a security officer for almost 20 years. Anthony says his Navy experience continues to shape the way he serves and leads in his role today. The discipline, leadership, and tactical skills he built in the Navy translate directly to his work at Northwell. “De-escalation, situational awareness, teamwork, and adaptability have become cornerstones of my approach to safety and patient care,” shared Anthony.

Since joining Northwell in 2022 as a security officer, Anthony adds that the camaraderie of all coworkers has made his career transition easier. He focuses on his one mission: keeping patients, visitors and team members safe. He is especially energized by work that has an impact and collaboration with team members. He also shares how he has benefited from Northwell’s VALOR BERG (Veterans and Allies Liaisons of Reintegration Business Employee Resource Group). “The best part of being here is the genuine respect and support Northwell shows to service members across the organization. It is a safe and fun place to work with great resources, forums for like-minded veterans to stay connected, benefits, a pension, and room for advancement.”

Northwell Health is proud to support active service members and veterans like Anthony with job search training, veteran-friendly transition programs, health and wellness services, MOS code job search, and other career development resources that make it even easier for them to find successful careers with us.

Celebrating Black History Month

Feb 26, 2026/in Inclusion and Belonging /by mperlman

Celebrating Black History Month

This Black History Month, we are spotlighting two of our African American/Caribbean Bridges BERG (Business Employee Resource Group) team members, Tracy Clouden and Aisha Johnson. Discover how they are committed to fostering a culture of inclusion and belonging and find success in their career journeys at Northwell.

Tracy Clouden, Director, Customer Service, Revenue Cycle

Tracy joined Northwell in 2010 as a business manager, where she ensured accurate posting of insurance and patient payments. In 2014, Tracy began working as an assistant director of customer service in revenue cycle, where she implemented initiatives that enhanced patient experience and streamlined revenue service processes. These positions broadened her knowledge and ignited her passion for customer service which led her to become a director of customer service in 2022. Tracy attributes her dedication to operational excellence and enhancing patient experience to what led to her current role. In this leadership position, Tracy oversees multiple call centers, ensuring that billing inquiries are handled efficiently and timely. “Northwell’s collaborative and inclusive work environment, along with the organization’s commitment to professional development, assures me that I can grow my career while contributing to a team that truly cares about the communities it serves,“ Tracy said.

Tracy is also committed to fostering a culture of inclusion and belonging through advocacy — ensuring her community’s voice is heard and valued. She joined the African American/Caribbean Bridges BERG to grow her network and to enhance her career, both professionally and personally. She emphasizes how the BERG helps foster connection and belonging by allowing her to contribute to a positive workplace culture with individuals who provide a supportive environment. This year’s African American/Caribbean Bridges BERG theme for Black History Month is Powerful Past and a Brighter Future. This theme is meaningful to Tracy and relates to her career at Northwell. This Black History Month, Tracy reflects on her role at Northwell and how she contributes to building a brighter future. “This theme motivates me to contribute even more to positive change in both my professional and personal life. I am proud to support initiatives that aim to promote equality and empowerment,” said Tracy.

Aisha Johnson, Scheduler, Endoscopy and Perioperative Services, North Shore University Hospital

Aisha began her career at Northwell in 2007 as an inpatient secretary at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH). She advanced in her career, serving as a surgical coordinator in 2020 for neurosurgery. In this role, she established strong relationships with physicians, supervisors and colleagues which led her to a senior administrative support coordinator role in 2022, then her current role as a perioperative scheduler in 2025. Currently, in her role, Aisha coordinates operating room and endoscopy schedules at NSUH, acting as a liaison among outpatient offices, medical staff and hospital services.

Aisha highlights the African American/Caribbean Bridges BERG’s impact on her career journey, explaining that it provided essential networking opportunities and made her a more well-rounded team member. “Joining the BERG has allowed me the opportunity to connect with people I may not have otherwise had the opportunity to meet at my day-to-day job,” she says. “The BERGs are a way to help me ‘refill my cup’ when I need it most.” Like Tracy, Aisha is also committed to fostering a culture of inclusion and belonging through networking and strengthening personal and professional connections with other BERG members. Like Tracy, Aisha feels that this year’s theme of Powerful Past and a Brighter Future, relates to her career. “To me, this is a time to reflect upon our growth as a nation, and our growth at Northwell. This is an opportunity to remember all that we have accomplished and think about how we can contribute to building a brighter future,” said Aisha. This month, our African American/Caribbean Bridges BERG members are actively participating in events designed to further connect and uplift the community. These activities include virtual networking sessions, membership gatherings, fireside chats, and volunteering opportunities in the community. The BERG is also hosting a Black History Month Walk/Run to encourage health and wellness, foster connection within the Black community, and highlight the importance of representation in our communities.

Two paths to perfusion: Meet Danielle and Robert

Two paths to perfusion: Meet Danielle and Robert

At Northwell Health, our team members are dedicated to the well-being of our patients and the communities we serve. Our perfusionists are an integral part of patient care before and during surgery with responsibilities that include monitoring, preparing and operating extracorporeal circulation equipment. Learn more about Danielle and Robert’s career paths to becoming perfusionists at Northwell’s North Shore University Hospital (NSUH).

From respiratory therapist to perfusionist, meet Danielle

Danielle Castellano began her career with Northwell in 2018 as a respiratory therapist. She worked in the cardiothoracic intensive care unit (ICU) where she became interested in perfusion. In 2023, Danielle was accepted into a master’s program for cardiovascular sciences in perfusion medicine. While attending classes and clinical rotations, Danielle continued working per diem as a respiratory therapist at Huntington Hospital.

In 2025, she graduated from the program and began working as a full-time cardiovascular perfusionist at NSUH. “Northwell’s emphasis on professional growth helped guide my transition into a perfusionist role and my continued growth within the organization,” said Danielle. As a perfusionist, Danielle operates the heart-lung bypass machine during cardiac surgeries, temporarily taking over a patient’s heart and lung functions to create a bloodless surgical field. She monitors and manages physiological parameters, including blood flow, blood pressure and oxygenation. Danielle also collaborates with surgical teams to anticipate surgery needs, respond to changes and manages extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for patients requiring advanced cardiac or respiratory support.

From laboratory accessioner to perfusionist, meet Robert

In 2016, Robert Lorandini began his career at Northwell as a laboratory accessioner where he received, verified and prepared patient samples for testing. With the help of Northwell’s tuition reimbursement program, Robert was able to work in the laboratory and simultaneously complete his prerequisites for perfusion school. “Northwell’s investment in my studies along with strong mentorship from my leaders and team members helped me transition into a career in perfusion,” said Robert. While in school to become a perfusionist, Robert began a perfusion clinical rotation at NSUH in 2018, which helped him build foundational skills and confidence in the cardiac operating room.

In 2019, Robert completed school and started working as a staff perfusionist at NSUH. Currently, he manages cardiopulmonary bypass and supports complex cardiac procedures in collaboration with the surgical team. In 2021, Robert began working in a student coordinator role, where he mentors and guides perfusion students while also working as a perfusionist himself.

Through educational and professional opportunities offered at Northwell, our team members, like Danielle and Robert, feel supported to grow in their careers while contributing to our mission of providing outstanding care for our patients.

Discover Kelly’s career journey as a nurse manager of perioperative services at Northwell Health’s North Shore University Hospital

Discover Kelly’s career journey as a nurse manager of perioperative services at Northwell Health’s North Shore University Hospital

Kelly MacGilvray grew her skills and advanced her career with the support of her leaders and clinical development from an OR RN fellow to an OR nurse manager at Northwell Health’s North Shore University Hospital (NSUH).

Kelly began her career with Northwell in 2018 as an OR RN fellow at NSUH. There, she gained hands-on clinical experience assisting with surgical procedures, preparing the operating room, and ensuring patient safety. In addition, Kelly learned more about surgical techniques, how to accurately document procedures, and how to communicate effectively in the operating room through collaboration with her team. This set the foundation for Kelly to begin her next role as a staff OR RN at NSUH.

As a staff OR RN, Kelly prepared the operating room, assisted the surgical team and ensured all equipment, supplies and environments were sterile. She closely monitored the patient’s condition before, during and after surgery, kept records of procedures, and worked with the operating room staff to ensure efficiency and top-tier patient care.

Kelly felt like her leaders invested in her growth and created pathways for opportunity. “From the beginning, I realized Northwell is an organization where nurses could experience long, meaningful careers,” said Kelly. “The supportive environment in NSUH’s OR and the commitment to innovative patient care made Northwell a place where I knew I could build my career.”

This led Kelly to her next role as an OR assistant nurse manager specializing in orthopedic surgery in 2023. In this position, Kelly assisted with leading and managing OR nurses and surgical technologists by ensuring the OR is properly staffed and the team is trained for surgeries. She also advocated for patient needs and ensured all ORs were equipped with the necessary equipment and adhered to all safety and hygiene standards. Subsequently, Kelly was promoted to OR nurse manager in 2025, also specializing in orthopedic surgery.

As a nurse manager, Kelly oversees the OR’s daily operations, ensuring surgical procedures are efficiently scheduled and that equipment and supplies are available. She manages and supports nursing staff and provides guidance, training, and evaluations to ensure a high standard of care. Kelly is proud of her achievements during her time at Northwell, especially her career progression and her growth into a leadership role. “From my OR fellowship to my transition through leadership roles, my leaders at Northwell have always encouraged me to take on new challenges and build my skills,” said Kelly. “The guidance and resources Northwell provided me have shaped my career and prepared me to be a nurse manager.”

As a mentor for the nurses in NSUH’s operating room, she offers advice to those looking to grow their career, “Stay curious and do not be afraid to ask questions. Be eager to learn at every stage of your career. There is something new to learn every day.”

Discover a career well cared for with our nursing team and learn more about opportunities with Northwell Health today.

From student nurse extern to registered nurse, discover Leah’s career journey at Northwell Health

From student nurse extern to registered nurse, discover Leah’s career journey at Northwell Health

At Northwell Health, our nursing team members demonstrate compassionate, innovative care for our patients. We foster our nurses’ professional journeys by offering educational opportunities and work experience to gain new skills for continued success. Read on to learn more about Leah, one of our dedicated registered nurses (RNs) at Northwell’s Northern Westchester Hospital.

Leah began her career journey at Northwell Health in 2019 as a student nurse extern in Northern Westchester Hospital’s post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). In this role, under RN supervision, Leah closely monitored patients’ vital signs, performed basic care tasks and reported any changes in condition. She also supported her unit operations by documenting observations and facilitating efficient patient flow, applying what she learned in the classroom to clinical practice.

This led Leah to her next role in 2020 as a critical care RN fellow in Northern Westchester Hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU). In this role, Leah provided care for critically ill patients by monitoring and interpreting data from life-support systems, including heart monitors and breathing machines. She was responsible for acting quickly in emergencies and worked with physicians and other hospital team members to provide compassionate patient care. She learned advanced techniques and gained critical thinking skills, which helped her obtain her critical care RN certification in 2021 and led her to graduate from her program and transition from an RN fellow to an RN in the same hospital and unit.

She also performed frequent in-depth assessments to detect any changes in patient status and administered medications. Working in the ICU, Leah was skilled in crisis management, offering emotional support, education and advocacy for patients and their families. Building confidence in this role, Leah pursued training as a charge nurse, preceptor and rapid response team nurse. Leah shared, “In my transition from the intensive care unit to the cardiac catheterization lab, I was supported by leadership, my colleagues and the entire nursing education department.”

Today, Leah is responsible for caring for patients undergoing cardiac or electrophysiology procedures. She monitors patients before their operation by conducting pre-procedure assessments and administering medications. During the procedure, she monitors patients’ vital signs and assists the physicians. Post-procedure, Leah monitors the access site for complications and ensures patient pain management and discharge.

Since joining Northwell, Leah is grateful that her goals have been discussed and are supported by her nurse manager. She has leveraged many opportunities to advance her career, from her critical care registered nursing certification to her involvement in the Nurse Recruitment, Retention and Credentialing Council, which develops meaningful recognition strategies to celebrate credentialed RNs.  She is also thankful for her team and their encouragement along her career journey, as well as for the many programs and resources Northwell offers its team members, such as tuition assistance and reimbursement programs and student loan refinancing. “I love my team’s culture of care and the overwhelming support we receive every day. Our team provides high-quality, patient-centered care because we, as team members, are cared for as well,” said Leah.

Staying connected at Northwell Health

Staying connected at Northwell Health

Northwell built our alumni network to help strengthen relationships with former team members who have either retired or moved on to other opportunities outside of our health system. Those who join our alumni network gain access to resources and are often invited to alumni networking events as a way to stay and/or one day rejoin our team. Hear from Felicia and Julie who chose to return to Northwell and continue their career journey with us.

Felicia Ramjug – Cardiovascular Technologist

When Felicia first joined Northwell in 2014 as a radiology technologist, she was proud to be a part of the team at Lenox Hill Hospital. After a few years, she transferred to North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) to take on a new role as a cardiovascular technologist (CVT). “Throughout my career in radiology, I always knew I wanted to work in the cardiac cath lab. I was ecstatic when I got the job offer and was able to learn new skills as a technologist and be part of such a vital team.”

Within those nine years, she started a family. It was tough to be a new mom and have a job that required an on-call schedule so she ultimately made the decision to leave Northwell. “

A couple months after she left, Felicia stayed connected with her previous leaders and was offered an opportunity to return as a CVT to support the structural cases that were now being exclusively done in the new Petrocelli Surgical Pavilion at NSUH. “The hours were better suited for my work/life balance. I was able to continue doing what I loved, at a place that felt like home to me with a phenomenal team to support me when I returned.”

Julie Robinson-Tingue – Vice President, Development Communications

Julie first joined Northwell in 2012 as director of public affairs at Huntington Hospital. By 2021, she made the difficult decision to pursue her career outside of Northwell. “I had an excellent relationship with my leader and we had regular conversations about appropriate next steps for my career,” Julie says. “We both agreed that I required executive operations experience to round out my skillset.”

Thinking back to the day she left Northwell in 2021, Julie truly loved the people, mission of service and culture of this organization. She wanted the opportunity to use and share all she had learned to return to the organization that invested so much in her. She made a promise to herself to one day return. Five years later, she had the opportunity to return and assume an executive leadership role at Northwell.

Today, as vice president of strategic communications and donor engagement for the Northwell Foundation, Julie oversees a team of expert communicators who are responsible for tailored communications and stewardship programs for philanthropic donors to Northwell. She says Northwell has set her up for success with collaboration, transparency, growth, learning and mentorship. “All the tools are right here and our leadership team is committed to growing and developing our team members. If you really want to learn something new, there really is no reason why you can’t.”

From technologist to director, discover Rova’s journey in laboratory science at Northwell Health

From technologist to director, discover Rova’s journey in laboratory science at Northwell Health

At Northwell Health, our clinical laboratory team members work behind the scenes, utilizing state-of-the-art technology to deliver accurate information to our physicians so our patients can make informed healthcare decisions. Read on to learn more about Rova Lee-Huang, a Truly Ambitious director of clinical laboratory operations at Huntington Hospital.

Rova began her career journey at Northwell Health in 2012 as a clinical laboratory technologist at North Shore University Hospital’s (NSUH) molecular pathology laboratory. In this role, she extracted and analyzed DNA and RNA, and utilized advanced technology to aid physicians and other laboratory experts in disease diagnosis. This led Rova to her next role as a clinical laboratory technologist specialist in 2016, where she designed and optimized workflows for genetic testing. She also ensured high quality and accuracy standards, and trained and mentored other technologists. In 2017, Rova also had the opportunity to represent Northwell and present to the American Society for Clinical Pathology.

In 2018, Rova advanced in her position and began working as a clinical laboratory lead technologist. In this position, Rova trained and mentored molecular technologists and students who in a clinical laboratory technologist program completed their clinical rotation at NSUH. She monitored the lab’s quality control activities, and assisted in managing inventory and other laboratory resources.

Three years later, in 2021, Rova took her career to the next level as she began working as a manager of the clinical laboratory quality in laboratory administration at NSUH. In this role, Rova set the quality standard for all lab tests, ensured all federal and state regulations were followed, monitored lab processes, developed and updated quality policies, and provided guidance to laboratory team members on quality practices. Her work ensured accuracy and reliability of laboratory test results for Northwell’s patients. The experience and coaching Rova received from her director at NSUH prepared her for growth into a director role. In 2024, the opportunity became available at Huntington Hospital’s laboratory, and Rova decided to transfer to Huntington Hospital and take on the challenge of what is now her current role, director of clinical laboratory operations at Huntington Hospital. As the director of clinical laboratory operations, Rova coordinates with various hospital disciplines to ensure that the laboratory’s services meet patients’ needs. She also works closely with the laboratory medical director to develop a strategic plan that aligns with the priorities of Huntington Hospital, hospital administration and other Northwell Health laboratories across the health system.

Since joining Northwell, Rova has leveraged resources and opportunities to advance her career. She completed leadership development courses at Northwell’s Center for Learning and Innovation. Rova also participated in the Northwell Health Essentials of Leadership program and was invited to the North Shore University Hospital GROW group for growing leaders. “I have always been fortunate to have leaders who have supported my growth,” said Rova. “The materials covered in all these development programs helped me advance in my career.” Rova was also enrolled in the 2025 cohort for the Asian Management Accelerator Program through McKinsey Academy. She completed the program in August and reflected on how it was a great way to network with other leaders.

Rova is passionate about how she can contribute to support the mission of continuously improving Northwell Health’s clinical laboratory services. She takes pride in being part of an organization that represents high quality care for patients, and attributes her success to guided conversations with her leaders who’ve supported her along her career journey.

Carrying Service Forward: How Ivan Leverages his Military Experience at Northwell

Carrying Service Forward: How Ivan Leverages his Military Experience at Northwell

For Ivan Goranov, caring for others isn’t just a career, it’s a calling shaped first by his military service experience, now carried through his work as a patient care associate (PCA) at Northwell’s Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH). Today, Ivan is finding new ways to make an impact at Northwell by using the skills he gained while serving in the U.S. Army Reserves.

In 2017, Ivan enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves as a combat medic/healthcare specialist (68W). After completing his training at the U.S. Army Reserves Medical Center of Excellence, he was stationed at Fort Totten, NY, where he built his medical skills through hands-on training. When the pandemic hit, Ivan was called to help develop and implement new safety protocols to protect soldiers and the communities surrounding his base. That experience opened the door for one of the most defining chapters of his career: a nine-month deployment to Africa as a civil affairs team medic.

As the team’s medic, Ivan worked alongside U.S. Embassies and host nation governments who were developing humanitarian aid projects that supported hospitals, schools and underserved communities in areas where resources were scarce.

This deployment was more than just a job to Ivan. It gave him a sense of purpose and recognition that reaffirmed why he had chosen to serve. Inspired by the impact he made abroad, he decided to transition into civil affairs upon his return home. Over the years that followed, he reclassified as a civil affairs specialist (38B) and earned the position of team sergeant, taking on greater leadership and responsibility within the U.S. Army Reserves.

Serving in the U.S. Army Reserves for eight years, Ivan wanted to bring his skills into a civilian setting where he could care for people closer to home. In 2022, he joined Northwell Health.

Today, while still active in the U.S. Army Reserves, Ivan is a PCA in the oncology unit at SIUH, and spends his day assisting patients with daily activities, monitoring vital signs and supporting families through some of their most difficult moments. It’s demanding work, but to Ivan, it’s deeply personal. “The gratitude and recognition I receive from patients and their families, after providing the same level of care I would to my own family, is what keeps me going.”

Ivan also shared that the lessons he learned in the military are a part of everything he does at Northwell. From teamwork to situational awareness, from paying attention to the smallest details to staying focused on infection prevention, he’s found that his training translates seamlessly into his current role. Those skills allow him to deliver care with confidence and compassion, making every patient feel seen and supported.

Adding a civilian career to his military life seemed overwhelming at first, but Ivan says Northwell made the process easy from the very beginning. Before he joined the team, he connected with our Military Liaison Services department. They helped him review his resume, translate his military experience into civilian terms and prepare for the role he wanted. That support continued once he was hired. For Ivan, it wasn’t just about landing a job, it was about knowing there was a team at Northwell dedicated to helping service members thrive. “In my opinion, having a dedicated group of people who are knowledgeable, accessible and passionate about helping service members speaks to the culture at Northwell overall,” he explains.

“My biggest piece of advice to any veteran who joins our team is to make use of the programs that Northwell has to offer.”

For Ivan, his mission evolved. Whether he was supporting humanitarian efforts overseas, leading his Army team, or now caring for oncology patients at SIUH, each step has been about showing up for others. His journey is proof that the skills you carry with you—discipline, teamwork, compassion—can create impact in more than one chapter of your life. At Northwell, there’s space for your skills and your story to thrive.

From clinical sciences to finance, a rewarding career across professions

From clinical sciences to finance, a rewarding career across professions

At Northwell Health, not every role requires being at a patient’s bedside to enhance patient outcomes and make a difference. Everyone, including individuals in financial operations, is passionate about redefining healthcare and revolutionizing patient experiences. Our financial operations team members work behind the scenes to manage financial objectives focused on patient experience enhancements for the communities we serve. Read on to learn more about Mohammed Kazmi, one of Northwell’s Truly Innovative senior financial operations analysts.

Mohammed began his career journey at Northwell in 2018 as a clinical laboratory technologist student during clinical rotations in his senior year of college. In this role, he rotated among different departments of Long Island Jewish Medical Center’s main laboratory to learn while completing his degree requirements. During his rotations, Mohammed made connections within Northwell’s LIJMC which made him realize that he was drawn to the operational and business aspects of the hospital system. He developed a strong interest in data analytics and ultimately the finance aspect of healthcare which impacts patient care.

In 2019, after he graduated and obtained his license, Mohammed joined Northwell as a full-time clinical laboratory technologist in pediatric oncology at Cohen Children’s Medical Center. In this position, he performed hematology and other testing and communicated the results to the physician. While working in this role, Mohammed was also preparing to pivot his career into the financial sector of the organization. During this time, Mohammed also began pursuing his master’s degree in data analytics. The program gave him the foundation he needed to bridge the gap between his clinical lab background and his first role in finance.

In 2022, Mohammed started working as a laboratory information systems analyst intern at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. In this role, Mohammed gained hands-on experience and behind the scenes access into laboratory instruments, workflow of testing and how testing is maintained. By shadowing a laboratory information analyst, Mohammed worked to ensure that all systems were functioning properly. This experience led Mohammed to his next role in 2024, as a corporate financial analyst. Mohammed applied the analytical skills he learned in college to budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting for Northwell’s skilled nursing facilities and imaging centers. He was responsible for the monthly close processes and budgeting for the following year. Two years later, Mohammed transitioned into his current role of senior financial operations analyst. He now manages and reports on financial data, including accounts receivable and budgets, to support strategic decision-making. Mohammed also reviews insurance contracts, resolves discrepancies, and in collaboration with other teams, works to enhance financial reporting through software and processes.

Since joining Northwell, Mohammed has been grateful for the resources and opportunities he has received to grow in his career. Mohammed utilized Northwell’s tuition reimbursement program to pursue his master’s degree in data analytics. Recently, he also completed his master’s degree in healthcare administration, aligning his graduate studies closely with his career goals and current role. “My experience with the tuition reimbursement program is incredible. Discover Farhana’s career journey as a senior specialty pharmacist at Northwell Health’s Vivo Health Pharmacy

Discover Farhana’s career journey as a senior specialty pharmacist at Northwell Health’s Vivo Health Pharmacy

Throughout her time at Northwell, Farhana Khalid has received guidance, mentorship and opportunities to take on new challenges, which have been instrumental in her professional growth. Read on to learn more about Farhana, who grew her career from specialty pharmacist to senior specialty pharmacist at Northwell Health’s Vivo Health Pharmacy.

Farhana began her career with us in 2018 as a specialty pharmacist at Northwell’s Vivo Health Pharmacy, located in the Center for Advanced Medicine (CFAM) in New Hyde Park, New York. There, she was able to hone her skills in oncology and transplant — managing medication for patients with chronic or rare diseases, providing education on treatments and addressing side effects of medications. Farhana also collaborated with her colleagues to navigate prior authorizations and served as a patient advocate to ensure seamless, accessible and specialized care for patients, thereby enhancing their experience.

During her time as a specialty pharmacist, Farhana was supported by Northwell in her pursuit of specialized certifications. After passing the Certified Specialty Pharmacist (CSP) exam in 2021, she began working as a certified specialty pharmacist at Vivo Health Pharmacy at CFAM. In this role, Farhana assisted patients in managing their medications, ensured that they understood their treatments and any potential side effects, and also served as a patient advocate striving for the best possible health outcomes. Mastering this position led to her promotion to senior specialty pharmacist this year at CFAM.

As a senior specialty pharmacist, Farhana guides and supervises a team of pharmacists and their daily operations to ensure efficient service delivery. She performs all the duties she did as a certified pharmacist but also participates in additional programs that continue to drive quality and excellence in patient care within the pharmacy. Reflecting on her current position, Farhana shared that it is most rewarding for her to see her patients achieve their health goals and overcome challenges. “I enjoy working closely with patients, healthcare providers and my team to provide personalized patient care and support. I love that I can make a meaningful impact on patients’ lives as a senior specialty pharmacist.”

Farhana is proud of her achievements during her time at Northwell, especially her career progression and the opportunity to become certified and develop leadership and mentorship skills. “My team members have come to seek my guidance and mentorship, which is both humbling and rewarding,” said Farhana. As a mentor for others in specialty pharmacy, she offers advice to those looking to grow their career, “Throughout my time at Northwell, I have embraced opportunities for learning, building strong relationships and staying adaptable to advance my career. I encourage new team members to stay curious, look for growth opportunities and don’t be afraid to ask questions or take on new challenges.”

A career driven by continuous learning in retail pharmacy

Northwell’s pharmacy team members at Vivo Health Pharmacy, our retail pharmacy, are committed to delivering exceptional care to our patients and communities. Read on to learn more about Tim Barclay, one of Northwell’s Truly Ambitious associate clinical educators for Vivo Health Pharmacy.

Tim began his career journey at Northwell Health in 2018 as a pharmacy technician for Vivo Health Pharmacy at Lenox Hill Hospital. As a pharmacy technician, Tim focused on understanding our patients’ needs, answering their questions and providing support by working closely with their care teams.

This led Tim to transition into the role of lead pharmacy technician for the same Northwell site in 2020. In this position, he led and guided the pharmacy technicians. He also assisted in preparation, dispensing, manufacturing and repacking of medications while maintaining records, reports and ensuring workstations had sufficient inventories. Tim built strong relationships with his colleagues and other teams alike in his role. “I thrive in Vivo’s collaborative and supportive environment. My creativity is encouraged in my work on impactful projects that contribute to providing the best patient care possible,” said Tim.

Since joining Northwell, Tim has been grateful for the tools and opportunities he has received to grow in his career. “Northwell’s commitment to employee development is exceptional. I have leveraged their tuition reimbursement program to pursue my MBA, earned an Epic certification to become an Epic credentialed trainer, and utilized enrichment courses, which have been instrumental in improving my skills and creating opportunities for professional growth,” said Tim.  These resources led Tim to his current role as an associate clinical educator for Vivo Health Pharmacy in Enterprise Management, where he is responsible for optimizing training across all Vivo locations by developing resources for new initiatives, system upgrades and workflows.

When asked about his favorite part of his current role, Tim shared he finds it meaningful to train team members. “It is very rewarding to collaborate with Vivo Health’s leadership to help train and create more opportunities for pharmacy technicians to succeed, mirroring my own career journey,” said Tim.

Discover Christine’s career journey as a behavioral health RN at Northwell Health

Discover Christine’s career journey as a behavioral health RN at Northwell Health

Meet Christine, who grew her career from a patient care technician to a behavioral health registered nurse at Northwell Health’s Lenox Hill Hospital. Throughout her time at Northwell, Christine has been grateful for the opportunities and resources that have helped her grow professionally.

Christine began her career with us in 2017 as a patient care technician for Lenox Hill’s float team while also attending nursing school. Her responsibilities included ensuring the comfort and well-being of her patients by providing hands-on patient care under the supervision of registered nurses. She did this by monitoring vital signs, collecting specimens and assisting patients with dressing, mobility and more. This experience exposed Christine to various hospital services and career paths, helping her decide on a nursing specialty to pursue after graduation.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 2019, Christine began working as a medical-surgical nurse at Lenox Hill Hospital. There, she managed pre- and post-operative patients, administered medications and monitored vital signs. While working as a medical-surgical nurse, Christine developed an interest in working in the neurosurgical intensive care unit (ICU). To do so, she underwent the Critical Care Access Pathway (CCAP) training program — designed for nurses with limited critical care experience, which focuses on pathophysiology and nursing care. Upon completion, she began working as a neurosurgical ICU RN. Her skills in de-escalating behavioral health events and her passion for guiding patients through their experiences helped Christine solidify her true calling in psychiatry.

In 2022, Christine underwent more training to adapt to the specific requirements of psychiatric nursing, learning new terminology and patient techniques, including building relationships with patients. After completing this training, Christine began working in her current role at Northwell as a behavioral health registered nurse (RN) where she helps patients manage their mental health issues and/or substance abuse disorders. Today, her focus is on improving patient well-being by providing a therapeutic environment, administering medications, and assisting patients in developing coping mechanisms. “Within each role I’ve held at Northwell, I feel wholly supported by my team and I’ve seen how our patients feel that same quality of support in their care,” reflected Christine. Taking her interest in psychiatry a step further, she is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a specialization as a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner, with assistance from Northwell’s tuition reimbursement program.

Christine is proud of her achievements during her time at Northwell, including being nominated for our 2025 Truly Award for teamwork. Her unit had finalists for other awards and designations, such as the Above and Beyond Award for exceptional patient care, resulting from high Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Hospitals (HCAHPS) scores which measures patients’ perception of their hospital experience. Lenox Hill Hospital was also awarded the Magnet designation, which recognizes healthcare organizations demonstrating excellence in nursing practices and patient care.

“I’m extremely proud of our team and the recognition our psychiatry department has received based on the quality of patient care we provide every day,” said Christine. In addition to Christine’s pursuit to further her career through education, she also participated in mentorship programs and attended leadership conferences, plus behavioral health symposiums.

Each year, team members work together to build healthy habits by participating in our annual movement challenge. Led by Northwell Health’s Team Member Wellness team, the challenge encourages participants to create teams and walk across different areas of the world, while learning fun facts about the rich history, vibrant cultures and geography of the select destinations. This year’s “Journey through Africa” movement challenge saw more than 21,000 team members collectively walk over six billion steps to reach 13 different destinations during a six-week period. Following the six-week challenge, more than 1,200 team members took part in a blood pressure screening survey and reported experiencing improved sleep quality, decreased stress levels, increased physical activity and an overall enhanced perception of their health as a result.

Beyond the movement challenge, the Personify Health app (with more than 63,000 participants) further empowers our team to prioritize well-being. Team members track their activity with wearable devices, engage in programs focused on better nutrition, better sleep habits, and can even invite friends and family to join in for added support and motivation.

From brisk morning walks to weekend hikes, our Truly Ambitious team members find productive ways to develop healthy habits and stay active. Northwell promotes healthier lifestyle choices among our team by providing access to comprehensive wellness programs.

Join our Northwell team members who are already experiencing the benefits of our wellness programs. Explore career opportunities and discover a healthier, more connected you.
