Hispanic Heritage Month: Our Future Empowered by Diversity & Legacy

Sep 20, 2024/in Inclusion and Belonging /by mperlman

Hispanic Heritage Month: Our Future Empowered by Diversity & Legacy

With this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month theme, “Our Future: Empowered by Diversity & Legacy,” we wanted to hear directly from Northwell’s own team members about their career journeys and experiences as Hispanic and Latino Americans.

Meet Daritza Pena, Dr. Julie Gonzales, and Rafael E. Bou, who are part of our Hispanic and Latino BERG (Business Employee Resource Group). These individuals excel in their respective roles at Northwell and are committed to fostering a culture of inclusivity and belonging. Below are their stories.

Daritza Pena, Echocardiography Technologist, Imaging Services at Long Island Jewish Valley Stream Hospital

In her role as an echocardiography technologist at Long Island Jewish Valley Stream Hospital, Daritza Pena works with cardiologists to conduct tests, provide information that assists with diagnosing heart conditions, and she handles related paperwork including medical documentation that summarizes information found in the echocardiogram. Daritiza began her career at Northwell as a part-time echocardiography technologist. Within two years, she took on a full-time role as an echocardiography technologist.  Daritza was also given the opportunity in 2023 to be a member of her department’s Collaborative Care Council, where members of the department come together to discuss enhancement ideas for the department and hospital. Throughout her time on the Collaborative Care Council, she learned processes and procedures of the hospital, while working to improve her own department with the ultimate goal of improving patient care. Daritza appreciates the support she has received at Northwell and the fact that she has been able to meet and network with a diverse group of individuals.

Daritza reflects on the significance of Hispanic Heritage Month and how this year’s theme resonates with her. “This year’s theme highlights the idea that those who arrived in the United States before me were looking for a better future and made a difference. Today, it is our turn to pave the way for others.” Daritza is passionate about her role in the Hispanic and Latino BERG. She explained, “Being a part of the BERG has positively impacted my career. I have met colleagues with similar backgrounds and enjoy hearing their success stories. This has motivated me to grow in my own career.”

Dr. Julie Gonzales, MD, Attending Physician in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

Today, Dr. Julie Gonzales, MD,  is the attending physician in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) at North Shore University Hospital who began her career journey with Northwell in 2015 as an attending physician at an OB/GYN practice in Garden City. Beginning in December 2024, Dr. Gonzales will be acting as Chair of the OB/GYN Department at Peconic Bay Medical Center. In her upcoming role, she will oversee the department’s outpatient and inpatient operations. At the same time, she will continue seeing patients at her new OB/GYN practice in the Riverhead area. In addition to this next step in her career journey, Dr. Gonzales also serves on the Patient Experience Council for the postpartum, neonatal intensive care and labor and delivery units at North Shore University Hospital which uses collective feedback to deliver quality care to patients and their families. She is also a member of Northwell’s Hispanic Physician’s Initiative, which is a platform for Hispanic and Latino physicians to build relationships with those who have similar career-related and cultural experiences. Their goal is to use their platform to assist individuals who have been impacted by lack of healthcare access, or experience language barriers.

As a member of the Hispanic and Latino BERG, Dr. Gonzales is able to meet and network with other physicians and individuals who share similar cultural experiences. “We mentor and support each other, working together to deliver exceptional patient care,” shared Dr. Gonzales. Being a Hispanic and Latino BERG member has been a platform for her to contribute to positive change. She added, “BERG members have brought current concerns in the Hispanic & Latino community to our forum. As a result, our dedicated members have engaged in identifying impactful solutions to tackle these issues together.”

Rafael E Bou, Senior Director, Social Work Services, Northwell Health At Home

As senior director of social work services for Northwell Health, Rafael is responsible for leading community case management services, ensuring that support is provided to individuals with complex behavioral health needs. He also oversees a team of case managers, manages program budgets and resources, and works to implement new service delivery models.  Rafael began his career journey with Northwell in 2014 as a care manager. In 2017, he was promoted to a supervisor before he started working as a senior manager of operations for outreach and enrollment for health home care in 2018. The following year, Rafael was promoted to director of outreach and enrollment for Northwell Health At Home. Then in 2022, Rafael moved into his current role of senior director of social work services in Manhasset, New York.

Rafael reflects on the impact his membership in the Hispanic and Latino BERG had on his career journey and overall growth into leadership positions with Northwell. “Being a part of the BERG has been transformative both personally and professionally,” said Rafael, reflecting on his experience in the Hispanic and Latino BERG. “It’s provided a space for me to connect with others who share my cultural background, fostering a sense of belonging and community. I am so glad to be part of a group where I can honor and foster my heritage.”

One of the ways that Rafael feels he has benefitted most from this BERG membership professionally is that it helped create a path for Rafael to participate in Northwell’s McKinsey Leadership Cohort, which provides valuable skills and knowledge for becoming a more effective leader. The program deepened his understanding of inclusion and equity in the workplace, provided him with practical tools and strategies to strengthen his leadership skills, and expanded his professional network.

At Northwell, we are proud to provide the opportunity for Northwell team members like Daritza, Dr. Julie, and Rafael, to connect with individuals from the same culture and share the same mission to advance diversity, inclusion and health equity for all.

Patient Care Associate

Patient care associates provide direct care as assigned for a designated group of patients. These team members perform functions requiring skill and competence such as, but not limited to phlebotomy, EKG, obtaining specimens and cultures, activities of daily living and simple wound dressings and vital signs. They also share accountability for quality patient outcomes.

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Requires one (1) to three (3) years of relevant experience.

As you move along your career path from a patient care associate, you can grow into a clinical laboratory assistant by pursuing various paths, such as working toward an associate or bachelor’s degree in laboratory technology, a science degree, or relevant certifications. An associate degree in laboratory technology will allow you to work toward obtaining a license to practice as a clinical laboratory technician or histology technician in New York State. You can also receive tuition reimbursement while you continue your education.

Clinical Laboratory Assistant

Clinical laboratory assistants process reference testing specimens and facilitate their submission to various external reference laboratories. They also ensure external receipt of specimens and return receipt of test results.

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Requires up to one (1) year of relevant experience.

As you transition from a clinical laboratory assistant to a clinical laboratory technician, you will continue advancing your laboratory skills, gaining expertise in diagnostic testing, lab procedures, and technology. This can also open doors to other roles within the lab environment, such as a specialized technician position in histology. Additionally, you may choose to further your education by pursuing a bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science, which can lead to technologist roles, management, quality control, or education roles within the healthcare system. This path provides a range of opportunities for professional development and career advancement.

Clinical Laboratory Technician

Clinical laboratory technicians perform clinical laboratory procedures and examinations pursuant to established, approved protocols which require limited independent judgment and review. These team members perform routine cutting and staining of surgical specimens, frozen sections and special stains. They may also provide daily operational assistance to department leadership and provide clinical and operational guidance to support staff.

  • Requires an associate’s degree.
  • Requires current license to practice as a clinical laboratory technician or histological technician in New York State, plus specialized certifications as needed.
  • Requires up to one (1) year of technical experience.

Meet Monique, Clinical Professional Development Educator, Connector and Health Raiser

Sep 04, 2024/in Clinical Care /by mperlman

Meet Monique, Clinical Professional Development Educator, Connector and Health Raiser

Today, Monique Robinson is a clinical professional development educator at Northwell Health’s Institute for Nursing (IFN), but she held many nursing roles during her career—from a quality management registered nurse to a registered nurse case manager. What has remained the same is her passion for nursing and love of teaching others about quality patient care.

In her current role, Monique works with a team of nurse educators to prepare, onboard and teach Northwell Health team members, including overseeing orientations for in-patient care, patient support, and skills training.

Before Northwell, Monique was working in New York City and struggling to find work-life balance. She yearned to find work closer to home on Long Island so she could spend more time with her children while pursuing the next chapter in her nursing career. Monique started with Northwell Health in 2010 at Long Island Jewish Valley Stream (LIJVS) as a utilization management/quality management coordinator in critical care. In this role, she was able to leverage her background as a registered nurse to identify performance improvement opportunities through data analysis, develop performance improvement plans and implement them while also evaluating improvement effectiveness. She was most attracted to our organization because of the variety of nursing opportunities available that matched her professional experience.

Expanding her career into behavioral health, she worked as a registered nurse case manager in a float position from 2013 to 2018, before moving into a new role as a registered nurse case manager in orthopedics at LIJVS in 2018. Working for Northwell as a registered nurse case manager, Monique was able to practice across different clinical specialties. In this role, Monique acted as a link between her patient and their physician. She also worked to monitor, plan and evaluate the quality of care from admission to discharge. “It evolved my nursing practice through the ability to critically assess the patients’ needs and collaborate with members of the multidisciplinary care team,” said Monique, reflecting upon her time as a registered nurse case manager.

Throughout her career at Northwell, Monique is grateful for a work/life balance. Being closer to home has ensured she could be there for all of her children’s major milestones. With the help of Northwell’s tuition reimbursement program, Monique received financial support to go back to school and earn her master’s degree in nursing education from SUNY Stony Brook University in 2022. This led Monique to her current role as a clinical professional development educator, which she began in November 2023.

Monique is proud to work with such a collaborative team. She loves that she can hone her skills and learn new ones by working within different clinical specialties due to her supportive team. In discussing the evolution of her career at Northwell, Monique shared, “My clinical experience as a critical care and community health nurse allows me to confidently work for Northwell Health, knowing I align with their mission and values for providing excellent nursing care.”

At Northwell, our nursing team demonstrates their commitment to care by incorporating innovative thinking into their practice and consistently delivering excellence that elevates the healthcare experience. Turning a New Leaf: Five Interview Tips for a Career at Northwell Health This Fall

Aug 14, 2024/in Career Advice /by kmorello

Turn a new leaf with our top five interview tips this fall

Interviews can be a little nerve-wracking, whether it’s your first time or you’re a seasoned professional. With a competitive job market, nailing that interview can be the key to landing your dream job. At Northwell, we’d like to provide you with essential tips for both first-time and more experienced interviewees, covering both in-person and virtual settings. By following these tips, you’ll be better prepared and more confident, increasing your chances of securing the position you want and starting your new career journey, this fall.

Research the company

Understanding the company you’re interviewing with is crucial. Start by exploring the company’s website to learn about its mission, values, culture and stay up to date on recent news. This will showcase your genuine interest in the company and help you tailor your answers to align with their goals.

Pro tip:

Go beyond the basics and look into the company’s strategic initiatives, recent projects and industry standing. Utilize the company’s LinkedIn page to find connections within the organization and learn about some of the experiences their team members have had with career growth and workplace culture. This deeper insight can help you better understand if this is a company that interests you as well.

Virtual Tip: Keep a few notes written in front of you during virtual interviews to refer to, if needed. This can help you seamlessly integrate your research into the conversation without appearing distracted.

Practice common interview questions

Familiarize yourself with common interview questions and rehearse your answers with a friend or family member. Prepare for questions like, “Tell me about yourself,” “Why do you want to work here?” and “What are your strengths and weaknesses?” Practicing these will help you build confidence.

Pro tip:

While you might be familiar with common interview questions, focus on articulating your experiences and achievements clearly. Using the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method, you can structure your answers to demonstrate your problem-solving abilities and share successes.

Virtual Tip: Record yourself answering questions to evaluate your body language and tone. This practice can help you adjust your delivery for a better presentation during the LIVE interview.

Dress appropriately

Your appearance is the first impression you make. Always aim for wearing professional attire that aligns with the company’s culture. When interviewing, business attire is generally appropriate.

Pro tip:

Even for virtual interviews, dressing professionally can put you in the right mindset.

Virtual Tip: Choose a neutral, clutter-free background for virtual interviews. Lighting should come from in front of you, not behind you – and a quiet environment with no one else in the room also contributes to a professional impression. Don’t forget to test out your devices before the interview begins to ensure your camera and microphone are working properly.

Ask thoughtful questions

Prepare a list of questions to ask your interviewer about the role, team and company culture. Your questions should reflect your depth of understanding about the role you are interviewing for. This shows your enthusiasm and helps you gauge if the company is the right fit for you.

Pro tip:

Inquire about the company’s strategic goals, how your role would contribute to these goals and opportunities for professional development. This demonstrates your forward-thinking approach and genuine interest.

Virtual Tip: Keep your questions concise and relevant to avoid time lags that can occur in virtual settings.

Follow-up via email after the interview

Sending a follow-up email within 24-hours after the interview is essential to maintain momentum and show your eagerness in the role. In this note, thank the interviewer for their time and reiterate your interest in the position. Mention a specific topic from the interview that you enjoyed to make your email more personal and memorable.

Pro tip:

Your follow-up should be more strategic. Besides thanking the interviewer, briefly summarize how your skills and experiences make you the ideal candidate. Highlight any new insights gained during the interview and how they reinforce your enthusiasm for the role.

Virtual Tip: Avoid attaching emojis, memes and photos in the email to maintain professionalism.

These tips can be helpful to significantly enhance your interview preparation and performance, in both in-person and virtual settings. By demonstrating your knowledge, confidence and genuine interest you can set yourself apart from other candidates. Incorporate these strategies and you’ll be well on your way to landing your next job opportunity.

Put what you learned to the test! Look for your next opportunity at Northwell Health today.

Prioritizing self-care at Northwell Health

Aug 07, 2024/in Featured Articles, Wellness & Benefits /by kaiello

Prioritizing self-care at Northwell Health

At Northwell Health, the well-being of our team members is a top priority. We have over 100 wellness programs designed to help our team members and their families build healthy habits, manage stress, sleep better, strengthen their fiscal responsibility and plan self-care.

One of the many ways Northwell supports the well-being of our team members is through our annual Go for the Gold Paris Movement Challenge. Each year, our Team Member Wellness team features a different destination to help employees learn more about different locations throughout the world. This year was unique because instead of highlighting a specific country as a destination, the team highlighted the venues of the Paris Olympic games. In 2024, more than 3,500 teams made up of 19,100+ team members competed in the challenge. Each team of up to six colleagues had six weeks to walk approximately two million steps collectively to reach the final Olympic venue. Ten teams overall were selected – such as the CLI Steppin’ Squad and the Hot Chili Steppers, among the rest — with each participant receiving a $5,000 prize.

This initiative motivates team members to build in movement while working as a team. The encouragement to stay active and make healthier choices has a ripple effect, inspiring family and friends to join in and help motivate our participants. Team members are incentivized to get active not only by tracking steps with a wearable device, but by leveraging an app for tracking healthier habits, like a device-free bedtime routine and drinking enough water daily.

“The Go for the Gold Paris 2024 movement challenge is a fun way to bond with my team and compete against other teams from my hospital. I like that all teams that cross the finish line are eligible to win the grand prize, and your team doesn’t have to come in first place overall.”

– Karyn, Registered Nurse, Zucker Hillside Hospital

From walks outdoors during lunch to gathering with friends on days off, our teams found fun ways to get their steps in while gaining more exercise and energy, developing healthy habits and improving mental health. In addition, for our remote team members, it provides a unique chance to connect with their teammates even if not in person.

Get your Northwell career in motion!

Tausha’s Journey from the U.S. Air Force to Northwell

Jul 17, 2024/in Veterans /by kmorello

Tausha’s Journey from the U.S. Air Force to Northwell

As a top military friendly employer, Northwell Health is dedicated to creating a workplace where our military service team members from all backgrounds can thrive. Read to learn about the inspiring story of Tausha Allen, an emergency department technician at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH), who transitioned from success in the military to success at Northwell.

Tausha’s career with Northwell began when she connected with our Military Liaison Services team in 2022, but her journey in healthcare started long before that. With four years of active duty and five years as a reservist, Tausha’s military experience provided her with invaluable skills and a strong sense of purpose that has directly translated into her role at Northwell Health. As a medical technician in the U.S. Air Force, she played a crucial role in ensuring pilots were medically cleared to fly missions. This opened the door to her current position as an emergency department technician. In her role, she engages in hands-on patient care, assists nurses and providers, and conducts vital signs, EKGs, and point-of-care testing. Her military training instilled in her the discipline and capability to excel in a fast-paced healthcare environment..

Tausha’s personal and professional growth are marked with intention. Before coming to Northwell, Tausha planned her desired career roadmap that included not only becoming an emergency department technologist, but also receiving her nursing education at Adelphi University. In 2023, she applied to Adelphi University for their accelerated nursing program and in May 2024, Tausha was accepted into the program. This is a milestone she will be completing with the support of Northwell’s tuition reimbursement benefit. Upon completion of her nursing program, Tausha’s dream is to work as a critical care nurse at Northwell. She also plans to continue as a reservist and would like to work as a critical care air transport nurse in the U.S. Air Force.

One of the most exciting aspects of Tausha’s role at Northwell is the continuous learning and a collaborative environment. She values the willingness of her colleagues to share knowledge and appreciates the educational interactions with physicians. Recognizing her dedication, Tausha’s managers supported her transition to part-time night shifts, enabling her to balance her job and academic commitments. “The recognition and encouragement I receive from my colleagues and managers is what keeps me motivated,” Tausha says, “I adore the fact that there is so much to learn and that everyone is willing to teach.”

Tausha’s experience demonstrates that with a planning and determination, opportunities are within reach. Her advice for other military service members looking to continue their career journey at Northwell Health is to be intentional about their goals.  Veterans and military service members bring unique skills and perspectives that are highly valued in the workplace, and Northwell is committed to providing resources to support a transition to a civilian career.

Northwell Health celebrates Pride Month with our Expressions BERG

Jun 21, 2024/in Inclusion and Belonging /by kmorello

Northwell Health celebrates Pride Month with our Expressions BERG

At Northwell Health, we believe we’re made stronger by embracing the individual backgrounds and experiences of all our team members. Our Expressions BERG (business employee resource group) is a group of Northwell team members who are dedicated to a culture of inclusion and advocacy to support the LGBTQIA+ community. Learn more about how we celebrated Pride Month below.

Jared Oliveira, senior community relations program manager, has been serving as the co-chair of the Expressions BERG for almost a year. Reflecting on his journey, Jared recounts his initial involvement as an active member at North Shore University Hospital and his progression to an executive coordinator role over the past three years before taking on his current position. The BERG supports its members by offering resources and networking forums, thus empowering individuals and communities alike. Jared cherishes the collaborative spirit and the chance to connect with dedicated team members, saying, “We are always met with great teamwork and collaboration, and I love meeting team members from across the organization who share a dedication to bettering the experience for all!”

The Expressions BERG has significantly impacted Northwell employees by fostering a culture of inclusivity and advocacy. Jared highlights the role of Expressions members in enhancing the organizational environment through educational programs and community service, noting, “Every single person who speaks up, advocates and gets involved positively, contributes to enriching lives for everyone.” By working closely with LGBTQIA+ clinical teams, Jared has been able to blend his passion for patient experience with efforts to address community healthcare disparities, steering him to not only have the opportunity to create important programs, but to also lead them as they evolve into impactful resources for our team members. These experiences have enhanced his leadership skills and fueled his passion as an advocate for others.

Nicole Bergamine is an assistant nurse manager in the pediatric operating room at Cohen Children’s Medical Center. Her journey with the Expressions BERG at Northwell Health began in 2023, when she joined the group to find a community that resonated with her identity as a bisexual woman. Coming out later in life at 26, Nicole sought connections and a deeper understanding of how her identity intersected with her passion for healthcare. She feels Northwell and the BERG provides a safe space to be her authentic self while learning from others in multidisciplinary areas. “Coming together allows us to learn from each other and bring it back to our units,” she notes, emphasizing the collaborative learning environment fostered by the Expressions BERG.

Nicole feels the impact of the Expressions BERG on her career has been profound. The activities and community service initiatives not only foster a sense of belonging, but also expand her professional network. “Meeting new people within Northwell, as well as in our community, has been my favorite part. You see familiar faces after doing so many activities, and it’s nice to reinforce those connections,” she shares. Additionally, the BERG enhances her understanding of the diverse populations Northwell serves, enabling her to advocate more effectively for patients and educate colleagues on the unique experiences and needs of the LGBTQIA+ community. By leveraging the knowledge and resources gained through the BERG, Nicole has significantly enriched her role in healthcare, illustrating the transformative impact of such supportive networks on professional growth.

Northwell’s Expressions BERG participated in several events throughout the month of June to celebrate Pride Month in our community. From Babylon Village Pride and Queens Pride to NYC Pride and more, Northwell is honored to be a part of these celebrations each year so we can continue raising health for all.

Meet Gina, Operating Room Registered Nurse, Achiever, and Health Raiser

Jun 11, 2024/in Nursing /by kkeane2

Meet Gina, Operating Room Registered Nurse, Achiever, and Health Raiser

As an operating room registered nurse at South Shore University Hospital (SSUH), Gina Gaussaint loves being able to help our patients in the most critical moments of their health journey. In her role, Gina helps organize and deliver patient care by assessing patients, making diagnoses, plus planning and fulfilling procedures. Using her leadership skills, Gina is also responsible for assigning tasks and setting goals for her team to achieve.

Gina started her career with Northwell Health in 2004 as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at South Shore University Hospital (formerly Southside Hospital). With the financial support of Northwell’s tuition reimbursement program, Gina went back to school to become a registered nurse and earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 2015. Following graduation, Gina worked as a medical/surgical telemetry registered nurse at SSUH for 17 years, until she decided she wanted to try something different. She took a leap into continuing her education further and applied for a fellowship for operating room nursing at Northwell. In 2021, Gina completed her fellowship and today, she works in SSUH’s perioperative department as a registered nurse.

Gina considers the operating room to be a very collaborative environment where she is able to hone her current skills and learn new ones.  She is glad that each person knows how important each individual is in the OR and how it takes an entire team to have successful, life-saving outcomes. “It is such a big deal that I am able to help save somebody’s life,” said Gina. “It is just so fulfilling to know that you helped someone.”

Watch our video to hear more from Gina and other perioperative professionals at Northwell.

Gina speaks often about the impact her perioperative nurse educators and team members have had on her life and career. She shares how they are a very hardworking, dedicated group who are very supportive of her endeavors both in the operating room and in her personal life.  Throughout her career at Northwell, she has always felt supported by her leaders and grateful for a strong work/life balance. Things like shift flexibility, if needed, ensured she never missed any of her children’s major milestones, including birthdays, anniversaries, award ceremonies and more.

At Northwell, our perioperative services team delivers innovative surgical procedures with precision and purpose. With numerous awards and new surgery centers opening, our team is growing with opportunities to gain new skills and experience. When asked about her professional journey with Northwell Health and her future within the health system, Gina replied, “I work for the best health system.” She continued, “This is where I will retire – I absolutely love it here.”

Northwell Health’s annual Chefs Challenge takes food to the next level in healthcare culinary cuisine

Northwell Health’s annual Chefs Challenge takes food to the next level in healthcare culinary cuisine

At Northwell Health’s 13th annual Chefs Challenge, our talented culinary teams competed at the Institute of Culinary Education (ICE) in New York City to make a nutritious and delicious meal that may be offered to Northwell patients in the future. Northwell is committed to raising the bar when it comes to creating healthy cuisine for our patients and team members while redefining food in healthcare.

During the 90-minute, Top Chef style competition, teams of chefs, cooks and registered dieticians used an assigned set of ingredients to prepare nutritious and enticing three-course meals for the judges. The celebrity guest judge this year was Marcus Samuelsson, owner of Harlem’s Red Rooster and Chelsea seafood restaurant, Hav & Mar.

Phelps Hospital was awarded first place in the competition. Kelly Walker, executive sous chef at Phelps Hospital, shared that participating in Northwell’s 13th annual Chef Challenge was amazing.  One of the things Kelly loves about being a chef at Northwell Health is the care behind the food. “Food is medicine and Northwell keeps breaking the mold on what hospital food can be. The quality in the food that we serve has jumped leaps and bounds from what one would expect from a hospital and I am honored to be a part of it,” said Kelly.

The winning dishes included an appetizer of beet-and-brussels sprouts potstickers served with raw beets, a beet coulis and a vegan horseradish mouse. The main entrée was black trumpet mushroom-crusted monkfish with spring onions, fava beans and garlic-potato puree and for dessert, a delectable Valrhona chocolate and prune Napolean cake with a dark chocolate ganache. Plainview and Syosset hospital’s team placed second, with Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City placing third.

Susan Juechter, senior registered dietitian at Phelps Hospital, shared how exciting it was to be at the Institute of Culinary Education (ICE) for the Chefs Challenge this year. “The recipes submitted for the Chef’s Challenge not only demonstrate the skill and creativity of our Northwell Chefs, but also the nutritional understanding of building a balanced menu that meets the therapeutic needs of our patients.”

At Northwell, we believe that food is medicine and has the capability to heal our patients and the communities we serve. Looking to begin or advance your career in hospitality? There are a variety of positions available from chefs and cooks to food service and dining assistants. Be a part of an award-winning team with access to comprehensive benefits, career growth and development opportunities, wellness programs and more.

You can also receive tuition reimbursement as you continue toward becoming a medical/surgical registered nurse at an accredited university.

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

Licensed practical nurses are responsible for providing professional nursing care to patients in support of our physicians. During the course of the patient’s treatment, the LPN duties can include observing, conducting and documenting a thorough assessment of a patient’s medical status.

  • Requires graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing or of a nursing vocational or nursing technical school.
  • Requires current license to practice as a practical nurse in New York State, plus specialized certifications as needed.

If you are interested in growing in your career from LPN to a medical/surgical registered nurse, your next step is to complete your nursing degree and license.

Medical/Surgical Registered Nurse (RN)

Our medical/surgical registered nurses perform an age-specific plan of care for a designated group of patients using the nursing process of assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care. They collaborate with physicians and other team members in coordinating and implementing procedures and treatments. Our medical/surgical RNs are responsible for multiple steps of a patient’s care, including change dressings, insert catheters, and start IVs, adjusting specialized medical equipment as needed, as well as interpret and record measurements and monitoring patients’ vitals and report adverse reactions to medications in a timely manner.

  • Requires graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing is preferred.
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two (2) years and obtain a BSN degree within five (5) years of job entry date.
  • Requires current license to practice as a registered professional nurse in New York State required, plus specialized certifications as needed.

A Journey of Reflection and Professional Growth: Meet Sabrina, Medical Assistant

Reflecting on her first year at Northwell Health, Sabrina Vidal attributes her growth and development to the support and guidance of her colleagues and leaders. Join us as we dive into Sabrina’s journey as a medical assistant at Northwell Health’s University Physicians Group Medicine in Staten Island, NY, showcasing her dedication and passion for health care.

Sabrina entered the medical assistance profession for the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives. “What I love most about working at Northwell is getting to help the people in our community. I enjoy getting to know each patient I encounter daily.” Building meaningful relationships with her patients and collaborating with her esteemed colleagues are among the many joys Sabrina finds in her role. Her top priority is to provide the best patient care for the individuals she helps. She is committed to addressing any patient concerns or questions, fostering a supportive and patient-centered environment in every aspect of her role.

Sabrina starts her day by carefully preparing patient rooms, sterilizing them, and ensuring they are fully stocked with essential supplies for the physicians and nurses. A central aspect of her role involves triaging patients, where she warmly greets them, introduces herself, and ensures their comfort throughout their in-office exam experience. Sabrina meticulously documents patient questions and concerns, takes vital signs, and relays detailed feedback to the clinical care provider to ensure comprehensive care. She also assists with clinical tasks such as preparing vaccinations and aiding in tests. Sabrina’s cross-training extends to administrative duties, including answering phones, checking patients in or out, communicating test results, and assisting with intake forms.

There are many ways to jump into a career path as a medical assistant. Those who have completed 1-3 years as an emergency medical technician or certified nursing assistant are two new ways someone can enter this field. In 2010, Sabrina graduated from The Willsey Institute in Staten Island, NY, where she received her medical assistant certification. Afterwards, Sabrina went on to work in internal medicine at a local healthcare provider. She then, stepped outside of the health care industry to work in local government. When she realized a career in health care was her true calling, she pursued a position at Northwell as a medical assistant on our Staten Island team.

Sabrina admits that when she was set to start her new role, She credits her team for making her feel at ease during her transition into a career at Northwell, “My growth and development has been nurtured through continuous training and the unwavering support of my peers,” Sabrina shares, emphasizing the collaborative philosophy that fills the Northwell community. It’s this supportive environment that has empowered Sabrina to flourish in her role during her first year.

Sabrina highlights the glowing testimonials from fellow team members and the prospect of contributing to a patient-centric environment is what drew her to Northwell. For Sabrina, Northwell isn’t just a workplace; it’s a community driven by a shared commitment to excellence in healthcare delivery. Sabrina has aspirations to learn more about ultrasonography and the prospect to take advantage of our tuition assistance program to advance her career. Her future at Northwell Health is filled with potential and possibility.

Celebrating Women’s History Month and a culture committed to growth

Celebrating Women’s History Month and a culture committed to growth

This year, the theme for Women’s History Month is: Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion. We connected with two of our Northwell team members, Celenise and Caitlin, from the Women in Healthcare Business Employee Resource Group (BERG) at Northwell Health, who share their journeys and career experience. Join us as we explore how they utilized Northwell’s professional development resources to grow their careers and felt supported along the way.

Celenise M. Mahmood, senior learning and organizational development specialist, revenue cycle

Celenise was drawn to Northwell due to its renowned commitment to delivering high-quality patient care and its innovative approach to healthcare. In her current role, her primary responsibility is to design, implement and evaluate learning and development initiatives tailored specifically to the revenue cycle department. Celenise began her journey at Northwell in 2014 as an administrative support associate and grew within our organization with access to programs such as our BERGs, tuition assistance for continued education, career coaching and mentorship opportunities with seasoned healthcare leaders. In 2016, she transitioned to a financial counselor at Lenox Hill Hospital. Then, she was promoted to senior revenue cycle quality and performance analyst in 2018. Five years later, she was promoted to her current role of senior learning and organizational development specialist.

With over a decade of experience and through her networking connections, Celenise is a true advocate for her BERG members and a co-lead of the Women in Healthcare BERG membership development committee.  She shares the importance of Northwell’s BERGs because, “becoming a BERG member has had a significant impact on my career journey at Northwell by providing opportunities for networking, mentorship and career coaching to help further my professional development.”

As a woman of Puerto Rican and Trinidadian heritage, Celenise feels our BERGs, like Women in Healthcare BERG, Hispanic Latino BERG, and African American/Caribbean BERG, reinforce this year’s theme of diversity, inclusion and belonging for Women’s History Month: “They provide a platform to connect and support one another, ultimately contributing to a more equitable and empowered workforce,” she said.

Caitlin Brown, registered nurse, Glen Cove Hospital

Caitlin Brown began her career at Northwell in 2019 as a newly graduated registered nurse at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in the telemetry/medical surgical unit. In 2021, she transitioned to her current role as a registered nurse in the emergency department at Glen Cove Hospital. Northwell has supported Caitlin’s career journey in many ways as she is currently receiving tuition assistance as a graduate student in the Northwell Health Stony Brook University Cohort for her master’s degree in nursing education. She has participated in Northwell’s mentorship program at Glen Cove Hospital both as a mentee and now advocates for her fellow team members as a mentor in that same program. Caitlin is also certified in the trauma nursing core course (TNCC) and achieved level three (the highest level) within the clinical ladder program, now serving as the clinical ladder co-chair at Glen Cove Hospital. “Being a part of Northwell, these opportunities have truly paved the way to support my career goals and professional development,” shared Caitlin.

This year’s theme resonates closely with Caitlin, as an active member of the Women in Healthcare BERG, African American/Caribbean BERG and Glen Cove Hospital’s Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging Committee. Caitlin shared, “I will always be an advocate in our workplace and community. This year’s theme also aligns with Northwell’s mission and commitment to the Culture of C.A.R.E.”

When asked why Caitlin believes it is so important for Northwell to have BERGs, Caitlin shared, “BERGs are a significant part of being a team member at Northwell. BERGs enable team members to make connections, network and learn from those who share similar interests and backgrounds.”

Northwell’s Women in Healthcare BERG is hosting various celebrations and events during Women’s History Month, including panel discussions featuring influential female leaders in healthcare, fireside chats, networking opportunities, workshops focused on career advancement and empowerment and celebrating the achievements and contributions of outstanding women across Northwell through our Women Who Inspire Awards. At Northwell, we’re proud to showcase the experiences of Northwell team members, like Celenise and Caitlin, who share in our mission to advance equity, diversity and inclusion for all.

Taking Imaging Skills in New Directions: Meet CT Technologist, Carmen Arana

Meet Carmen Arana, CT technologist at Northwell Health Reichert Family Imaging in Huntington, NY. During her career journey as an imaging specialist, Carmen has had some unique opportunities to expand her skills in different ways.

She studied Radiologic Technology at Westchester Community College before joining Northwell Health in 2014, and with Northwell’s tuition reimbursement assistance, Carmen continued her education to achieve a Bachelor of Science in 2021 from the CUNY School of Professional Studies.

As a CT technologist, Carmen operates a computed tomography machine to create detailed images of internal organs, bones, soft tissue, and blood vessels. She helps prepare patients for various exams and ensures that the radiologist has all of the clear information needed to make an informed diagnosis. Her responsibilities also include managing the patient flow and assisting the x-ray department, when needed.

Carmen knows her role as an imaging specialist at Northwell is meaningful. “I am able to provide a safe and complete diagnostic exam using state-of-the-art technology,” she says. “This encounter alone can have a huge impact on how a patient’s treatment progresses. I enjoy helping patients have the best experience possible and appreciate the thanks I am given in return.”

When a patient sees an imaging specialist, it is often at the start of addressing a health concern. A CT technologist like Carmen will guide a patient through what may feel like an intimidating examination. From collecting and entering health history to analyzing the number of scans required, a CT technologist aims to make the process as smooth as possible for every patient. Careful attention to detail results in reduced time under scanning equipment and more efficient outcomes.

When asked what makes working as a CT technologist at Northwell unique, Carmen says that it’s the different opportunities that team members are given to use and grow their skills. “I had a one-of-a-kind opportunity to work with The Nature Conservancy to scan samples of water from various marshes in our area. It was a project designed to help improve the quality of the water around Long Island. Having the ability to apply my knowledge in an area outside of my direct responsibilities gave me learning experiences I may not have otherwise been able to take advantage of.”

Carmen’s next step in expanding her knowledge is her intention to pursue a Master of Science in Health Informatics.

You too can discover a career well cared for with opportunities to expand in your role at Northwell Health. Apply to become an imaging specialist with us today.

Inspiring Change: Reflections on Black History Month

In honor of Black History Month, we would like to shine a spotlight on some of the remarkable journeys and voices that shape our organization’s dynamic landscape. Meet Christopher Moses, Kiana Turner and Tricia Sinclair, as they share their experiences, insights and reflections on their involvement in our African American/ Caribbean Bridges BERG (Business Employee Resource Group). These individuals not only excel in their respective roles at Northwell, but actively contribute to Northwell’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion for all. Join us on this exploration of careers and celebration of our inclusive culture.

Kiana Turner, Supervisor, Talent Acquisition

Motivated by the pandemic’s impact and a desire to contribute to healthcare, Kiana Turner found Northwell’s mission and values aligning with her own goals. Starting as a talent acquisition specialist in April 2022, she swiftly progressed to senior talent acquisition specialist and then became a supervisor in September 2023. Today, Kiana leads a team that recruits clinical and non-clinical team members into our health system for a number of Northwell locations across our health system. With a focus on operational excellence, candidate experience and more, Kiana ensures her team understands the significance of their role and how they can impact lives of patients in our community, by finding more Health Raisers to join our health system.

During Black History Month, Kiana reflects on how she has been empowered to seek more opportunities within Northwell, challenging her to think differently about her impact. “In the BERGs, everyone has a home and a safe place. Since joining the African American Caribbean (AAC) Bridges BERG, my Northwell family has grown even larger and I’m so proud to be a part of it.” Kiana is currently pursuing an MBA with a concentration in Human Resources Management. She not only feels supported by her managers in continuing her education, but she also is supported by Northwell, as she takes advantage of our tuition reimbursement program.

Christopher Moses, EEG Technologist Manager, North Shore University Hospital (NSUH)

As an EEG technologist manager at NSUH, Christopher Moses oversees EEG technicians who provide competency training, on-site assistance, guidance and support across all hospitals and facilities within the service line. His career progression within two years, from EEG supervisor to manager, exemplifies Northwell’s trust in his capabilities. As a leader advocating for greater representation of EEG technologists in neurology, Christopher appreciates Northwell’s support in providing guidance and training opportunities that engage him in career development discussions.

Christopher reflects on the significance of Black History Month and how this year’s theme, “African Americans and the Arts,” makes him feel connected to his personal passion for public speaking. “It’s vital for Northwell to have groups like the AAC BERG as they provide opportunities and raise awareness for underrepresented communities.”  Christopher enjoys participating in local events during Black History Month, including one at his hometown fire department. Joining the BERG has allowed him to connect with colleagues, build meaningful relationships, and pursue his passion for public speaking within the organization and in his community.

Tricia Sinclair, LMSW Palliative Care Social Worker, North Shore University Hospital (NSUH)

Starting her Northwell journey in 2019 as a social worker on the stroke unit, Tricia Sinclair transferred to the palliative care unit in 2020, focusing on compassionate patient-centered care — providing psychosocial support and assisting with transition of care for patients in the palliative care unit. As a member of our AAC Bridges BERG, she contributes to addressing health equity and social justice. With over 480 members in the NSUH chapter of the AAC Bridges BERG, Tricia was appointed as BERG Co-Chair in 2021, where she spearheads cultural awareness events, fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion at the hospital for all team members. “Being a BERG member and team player are an important part of my career journey at Northwell,” says Tricia, “it’s allowed me to help shape our hospital’s culture, promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace.”

Tricia’s dedication to the BERGs is evident in her transformative leadership, achieving significant membership growth and organizing impactful cultural events. Recognized with awards like NSUH Hero and Community Champion, Tricia is a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging champion, fostering positive change within Northwell and the community.  During Black History Month, she reflects on progress, unity, and resiliency. “To me, valuing and honoring how black people have given so much to American culture and the world is so important,” shared Tricia. “We’re embracing this year’s theme of African Americans and the Arts in showcasing black artistic contributions and inspiring greatness through BERG events like fireside chats, art exhibitions and more.”

These career journeys and insights showcase the transformative role of our Business Employee Resource Groups (BERGs) in creating a vibrant culture and empowering an environment that celebrates diversity.
