Inspiring Change: Reflections on Black History Month

In honor of Black History Month, we would like to shine a spotlight on some of the remarkable journeys and voices that shape our organization’s dynamic landscape. Meet Christopher Moses, Kiana Turner and Tricia Sinclair, as they share their experiences, insights and reflections on their involvement in our African American/ Caribbean Bridges BERG (Business Employee Resource Group). These individuals not only excel in their respective roles at Northwell, but actively contribute to Northwell’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion for all. Join us on this exploration of careers and celebration of our inclusive culture.

Kiana Turner, Supervisor, Talent Acquisition

Motivated by the pandemic’s impact and a desire to contribute to healthcare, Kiana Turner found Northwell’s mission and values aligning with her own goals. Starting as a talent acquisition specialist in April 2022, she swiftly progressed to senior talent acquisition specialist and then became a supervisor in September 2023. Today, Kiana leads a team that recruits clinical and non-clinical team members into our health system for a number of Northwell locations across our health system. With a focus on operational excellence, candidate experience and more, Kiana ensures her team understands the significance of their role and how they can impact lives of patients in our community, by finding more Health Raisers to join our health system.

During Black History Month, Kiana reflects on how she has been empowered to seek more opportunities within Northwell, challenging her to think differently about her impact. “In the BERGs, everyone has a home and a safe place. Since joining the African American Caribbean (AAC) Bridges BERG, my Northwell family has grown even larger and I’m so proud to be a part of it.” Kiana is currently pursuing an MBA with a concentration in Human Resources Management. She not only feels supported by her managers in continuing her education, but she also is supported by Northwell, as she takes advantage of our tuition reimbursement program.

Christopher Moses, EEG Technologist Manager, North Shore University Hospital (NSUH)

As an EEG technologist manager at NSUH, Christopher Moses oversees EEG technicians who provide competency training, on-site assistance, guidance and support across all hospitals and facilities within the service line. His career progression within two years, from EEG supervisor to manager, exemplifies Northwell’s trust in his capabilities. As a leader advocating for greater representation of EEG technologists in neurology, Christopher appreciates Northwell’s support in providing guidance and training opportunities that engage him in career development discussions.

Christopher reflects on the significance of Black History Month and how this year’s theme, “African Americans and the Arts,” makes him feel connected to his personal passion for public speaking. “It’s vital for Northwell to have groups like the AAC BERG as they provide opportunities and raise awareness for underrepresented communities.”  Christopher enjoys participating in local events during Black History Month, including one at his hometown fire department. Joining the BERG has allowed him to connect with colleagues, build meaningful relationships, and pursue his passion for public speaking within the organization and in his community.

Tricia Sinclair, LMSW Palliative Care Social Worker, North Shore University Hospital (NSUH)

Starting her Northwell journey in 2019 as a social worker on the stroke unit, Tricia Sinclair transferred to the palliative care unit in 2020, focusing on compassionate patient-centered care — providing psychosocial support and assisting with transition of care for patients in the palliative care unit. As a member of our AAC Bridges BERG, she contributes to addressing health equity and social justice. With over 480 members in the NSUH chapter of the AAC Bridges BERG, Tricia was appointed as BERG Co-Chair in 2021, where she spearheads cultural awareness events, fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion at the hospital for all team members. “Being a BERG member and team player are an important part of my career journey at Northwell,” says Tricia, “it’s allowed me to help shape our hospital’s culture, promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace.”

Tricia’s dedication to the BERGs is evident in her transformative leadership, achieving significant membership growth and organizing impactful cultural events. Recognized with awards like NSUH Hero and Community Champion, Tricia is a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging champion, fostering positive change within Northwell and the community.  During Black History Month, she reflects on progress, unity, and resiliency. “To me, valuing and honoring how black people have given so much to American culture and the world is so important,” shared Tricia. “We’re embracing this year’s theme of African Americans and the Arts in showcasing black artistic contributions and inspiring greatness through BERG events like fireside chats, art exhibitions and more.”

These career journeys and insights showcase the transformative role of our Business Employee Resource Groups (BERGs) in creating a vibrant culture and empowering an environment that celebrates diversity.
